VIkes v. Saints Recap

That was depressing.

Lucy just pulled the football away from Charlie Brown again.

The interception aside, the person responsible for the 12 men in the huddle penalty should be given a "sock party" (see Full Metal Jacket) by every Viking fan.

I watched the game alone last night. Had some other obligations so I didn't start it until and hour+ in... I watched the kick go through the uprights at 8:27pm, I know exactly because I paused it right as the kick was going through the uprights, not wanting to see what happens next, thinking if I paused it I would never have to see that extra 3 points go up on the scoreboard...I sat there for awhile, alone on my couch, empty Stella in my hand, eerily quiet. I have so many things to say about that game, but all that seems to come out is "why bother- what's the point"...damn that lucy

Darren Revelle on CNBC just said that the Viking NFC Champs shirts and the Jets AFC Champs shirts are being sent to Haiti.

I am changing my vote to the most painful loss.

I still think 1998 was worse, given that we were the #1 seed, 15-1 and favored by double digits (if I recall correctly).

I have a lot of things to rant about, but I just don't have the energy to do it yet.

12 men in the huddle is squarely on the coaches. Brutal...and I really do believe there was some awful karmic payback in that Favre pick. Maybe we did make a deal with the devil?

Do we want Favre back next year? I say yes, unless McNabb or another similar - and longer-term - option becomes available.

Oh - and I refuse to blame the officiating, but that OT drive by the Saints was absolute f-ing garbage. The pass interference call was criminal. You simply CANNOT make that call at that stage of the game. That ref needs to be knee-capped. The review of Thomas' dive on 4th and inches was never going to be overturned...

The game was a perfect microcosm of Favre's career...lots of great plays, lots of excitement, and one horrendous, ill-timed decision. All that said, he did show some serious heart playing through the beating he took.

In the end, these losses actually connect me to the team even more. It's counterintuitive, but I really believe it. I just really hope we win a super bowl in my lifetime. The window of opportunity in the NFL is so short and so small, that you have to convert when given golden opportunities. We handed that one away...sad. Very sad...

Okay...that was already a mini-rant. I'll be back for more.

To answer dtk's question from last week about whether bracing for the inevitable disappointment makes the disappointment itself more tolerable, I'd say that while applied to real life he's got a great point, in this particular instance, yes, it probably does help. Had I bought in, at any point from Game 1 until Favre hit Rice to cross midfield on that final drive last night (and let me tell you, the temptation at that moment was almost unbearable), I'd be having to save up to replace a lot of valuable home furnishings right now.

Jeebus, I feel for you guys today. When I wrote after going to the Super Bowl back in '07 how I wanted for my friends (who are more worthy, diehard Vikes fans than I am) to experience that someday, I meant it, and I still do. You all deserve that payoff. One day you'll get it. I'm just sorry it's not now.

Have the Vikings reached pre-'04 Red Sox status in the NFL now? Why is bad shit ALWAYS happening to this team? This has to be, by far, the most successful franchise in any major sport to not have a title. We're not talking about the Texas Rangers or the St. Louis Blues here - it's a franchise that's reached the playoffs pretty much every other year during its existence. The odds of not once defying the odds, except when they're the favorite (and then always defying the odds), have to be close to astronomical at this point.

So, here's my plan: All we have to do is put our finger on what the specific curse is behind this team, build up a mythology around it, and then knock it down. With the karmic help of all of America, who will rally to our cause once they can put a name to what ails this franchise, we will finally go all the way.

Let's work on that this offseason, so as to put what happened last night in the vault and not have to obsess over it for the next 6 months.

By the way, for those of you who dabble in betting, can you find a way for me to put down $100 in favor of "Vikings lose heartbreaker of an NFC Championship Game after 2020 season" right now? 1975, 1987, 1998, now 2009. We'll be due right around then for another epic choke. I'd have to get some decent odds on this 11 years out, right?
