Sally the Goldfish

My daughter's fish, Sally the Goldifsh, swam to the lake at the end of the stream. Rest in peace. 12/24/09-01/26/10.

This is an excerpt from an email exchange between me and RTS pre-xmas when he mentioned he was giving "Sally" and I asked for the over/under on "Sally's" remaining days with us:

RTS said:
"The over under on the first set is 2 weeks. The question will be will it be due to overfeeding or the quick realization that fish do not like to play in the doll house."

So, was this the first set? And what did the over pay out at?

That's hilarious. We almost got the kids a goldfish for Christmas, too, but being out of town over New Year's saved us the trouble.

How did your talk about death, goldfish heaven, etc. go?

The cause of death is unknown. It is safe to say that Annie did not have a role in it. It should be noted that we, me with Annie watching since it was her fish, cleaned the tank on Sunday, which seems a little too coincidental. No, I did not use any chemicals, just a quick wipe down on the inside and some new water.

We have not told her yet. My wife made a point to rush Annie out of the house to school, neglecting Annie's responsibility to turn on Sally's light. We will come home from school today to find the floating fish.

I am guessing that trying to explain the goldfish was old will not fly, nor would she believe we took it to the ocean to swim with other fish. There will probably be a little god talk and heaven. It is 50/50 whether there are tears or indifference. I am guessing tears as just yesterday she drew a family picture and Sally was included.

Even though Sally only lived a month at Hotel RTS, life was better than it could have been given that she was a feeder goldfish.

The plot thickens. An email from my wife:

I have been thinking about Sally - this am on the way out Annie ran back to see her. She turned on her light but didn't notice anything about her laying there. The top of her tank was off a little bit - not sure if you moved it or what - anyway, I kept telling Annie we needed to go and that you could fix it when we got home. She was adamant that something might happen to Sally today if the lid wasn't on right and that we needed to fix it. I did fix it but she was very concerned about it. Based on this am, I don't think it won't go over well now. Maybe you could pick up another one and then the next time it dies we tell her the truth???

Stay tuned...

This is classic now. Did you hire some sitcom writers for your real life? I can't wait for the moment when Annie takes one look at the replacement fish and says "That's not Sally!" and then runs off crying into the bathroom, where the toilet is backed up and the real Sally's floating in the bowl.

Just tell her Sally is gone now because of something she did.

I too can see the sitcom in this... Be sure to check pictures to see if Sally had any distinguishing marks, you may need to reproduce those on the "replacement fish" with a marker of some kind...for your daughter is sure to notice these sort of things.

I see fishgate going a number of ways, and in nearly every one of them I see you ending up promising her a pony. Keep us posted

The switch was made. I made the clerk at the store pick out one of the larger fish to match Sally's size. Dawn and Annie went out to dinner, giving me time to do the dirty work. When I got home, I said some nice words about Sally and then gave her the flush. Here is the kicker, when I cleaned out the tank and was getting it ready for Sally 1.5 (2.0 will be when Annie knows we got a new fish), I noticed that the air stone was not producing bubbles. Sally's cause of death was suffocation. Annie had no role in the death of the fish and the fault falls squarely on my shoulders. Good thing we did not start with a puppy.

RTS - Annie has been around for this long, I think you could handle a puppy. Nice work on murdering your daughter's goldfish, though.

RTS --

Get that puppy and then take it away from her after a few weeks. Tell her you did it because of something she did.

Then get her another puppy and say "be more careful". I'll bet then she'll take unbelievably good care of it.
