What Is Detroit Thinking?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jon_heyman/07/29/heyman.tradeblog/index.html?eref=T1

Pudge for Farnsworth? They're over .500 now and only 5 and 5.5 back of the Twins, who they have to believe they can catch, and the White Sox, who look more every week like they can't possibly hold on. So they go and trade one of the best defensive catchers of all time, who's hitting .295, for a reliably unreliable flame thrower with a pea brain. Does not compute. You trade a guy like Pudge when you decide you're out of it. And when you do, you get a couple prospects out of it.

Steinbrenner must have gotten a hold on Dombrowski hitting on 12-year-olds on chatrooms or something, because this deal makes no sense to me for anyone other than the Yankees. And it bails them out big time, as they get a huge upgrade behind the plate and a slight improvement in the lineup when they were in dire straits with Posada going down. All this for the low, low price of Farnsworth? Again, does not compute.

Just to add, this puts a big wrinkle in the AL Central race, as far as I'm concerned. If we take 3 of 4 from the ChiSox and call up Liriano, I have to think we're as good a pick as anyone to win. The Tigers are going from Pudge to Brandon Inge behind the plate and hitting every day. Inge is hitting .227, and hasn't caught regularly in five years. I have to think this will have an effect on the locker room in Rock City, too. They think management's finally given up on them and their season of high expectations now, just when they had started to turn it around and still have a very good chance in such a weak division.

I thought the same thing, glad that Pudge was out of the AL Central but confused as to why they would do the deal both because of Farnsworth and the fact they are only 5.5 games out and were starting to clobber people. I thought we had it bad that we never make any moves regardless, imagine being a Detroit fan this year.

One more thing, is the Seattle Mariners front office retarded? They make terrible offseason moves (Silva) and in any coversation with the Twins around Beltre they have wanted one of our starting young pitchers and/or Span. Beltre is a good defensive third baseman but he is a career .270 who must have done steriods in 2004 when he hit 48 home runs.

Oh, and Jr. going to the White Sox? If this was 1995 I would be freaked out.

I do not get it either. Both Pudge and Farnsworth are free agents at the end of the year, so clearly the Tigers think this is a move that will help them win now. This reminds me of an FFL deal Baba Booey (Jan) pitched me on last year. The only difference is I walked away from the table.

I kept waiting for the "Kyle Farnsworth and XXXX prospect." HUH??? This is so awful I can't even handle it. Farnsworth is a Class 5 meathead who gives up big hits like it's his job. The only reason he has a job is that he can throw 99mph. Glad Pudge is out of the division, though!! Only downside is that the Yankees suddenly look formidable again.

Griffey to the Sox? Heh. Who cares...I feel like they've gotten this far on chemistry and overachieving power hitters, so if this blows the chemistry a bit, I'm all for it. Like Jan said, if it were 1995, I'd be shaking in my boots. Or, if they landed Manny Ramirez I would be worried...
