Fav-ruh wants back in

I've waited as long as possible to even acknowledge that this is a relevant story, given how annoying it has been, but it has officially reached a point at which I can no longer ignore it.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/nfl/07/11/favre.packers.ap/index.html

Favre has asked the fudgers for his release. If the team grants him this request, and you believe what the pundits say, he'll sign with the Bears or...gulp...the Vikes. Personally, I just don't see us doing it...and it is kind of nauseating to think about. That said, the schedenfreude factor could be huge! Can you imagine how much those cheese-hat wearing losers would squirm watching him play in Purple...or in blue and orange?

Apparently, the other route the team could take is to trade him...undoubtedly to someone in the AFC (like Baltimore). For whatever reason, though, they seem intent on not taking him back.

Honestly, I love the whole drama, as it temporary sullies his legacy with Green Bay, and you know it's got the whole state of Wisconsin whipped up into a frothy lather when they should be focused on, and savoring the success of, the Brewers.

Couple thoughts/questions for the group:
1) He would be an upgrade at QB for the Vikings. Where do you stand on signing him? Like I said, I'm sort of in purgatory on the whole thing...I'd almost just rather get him out of the NFC and let him become washed up in Baltimore or Miami, but a small part of me thinks he'd be a huge upgrade.
2) Jan Stenerud, would you consider buying a Favre #4 jersey (in purple, or whatever team colors it ends up being) just to taunt the dudes at work?
3) What do you think his reception would be at the Dome or Soldier field?
4) If Ted Thompson releases him outright, how many death threats will he get? And does he get state patrol protection for the rest of his tenure there?

I think the Vikes should pass for the same reason the Pack seem to be passing. They have commited themselves to a younger QB. If the Vikes benched T-Jac for Farve I think it would submarine T-Jac forever.

Now the Bears on the other hand, who have given Grossman shot after shot, could use the super vet as a temporay fix to a ugly problem. However, I don't see the pack allowing Farve to go to either team in the North.

There is no way that Chilly, who drafted TJac and has been telling everyone around that he "has all the tools" completely goes the other way on this one and signs Favre. I agree with RTS, it would submarine TJac for the rest of his career for a one year fix.

Would any of you actually root for Favre in purple? He is arguably the most reviled opponent of any franchise in Minnesota sports history and all of a sudden we have to embrace him and root for him? Never gonna happen, not on my watch.

For some reason I could see him on the Bears which would be a win/win for us. It would kill Pack fans to see him in a Bears uni and Jared Allen could break Favre's jaw since that squad is in shambles.

Fellas,
Agree on all accounts. It makes me throw-up in my mouth when I think about him in purple (even though he'd be a one-year upgrade). Since posting this on Friday, it has become clear that there is no way the packers will release him anyway. He'll get traded before the season start...or re-retire. That's my prediction. I do like the idea of him on the Bears, though, for the reasons Jan discusses above.

I think Favre wants to come back to throw just one pass. Then he'll retire again, thinking everyone will then stop talking about how his career ended so ignominiously, and appropriately, with that INT against the Giants.

I'm so glad I missed most of the 24/7 "does Favre want to come back?" speculation while out of town. I'm sure it was insufferable.

Agree with all of you that the Vikes would never pick him up at this juncture. What would be perfect, but would never happen, of course, is for the Vikes to sign him and then bench him as an insurance package only. That would kill Packerbackers.

Jan, interesting declaration of "most reviled opponent of any franchise in Minnesota sports history." Probably right, I can't think of a rival off the top of my head. For some reason I've never disliked him so much as all the Pack fans who act like he's their older brother, and hated all the lovin' he's gotten from the press throughout his career. Minnesotans have always enjoyed his failures more than admired his successes, though, for sure.

The second "most reviled opponent of any franchise in Minnesota sports history" is a tough question. Like MCA, none come to my mind quickly. Guys like Walter Payton and Barry Sanders drew more respect than hate (plus both spent the majority of their careers playing for cruddy teams.) For teams like the Yankees, Cowboys and 49ers who have stopped many playoff runs for MN sports teams, it is only a one way rivalry. So who is number 2 on the list I don't know but some quick googling brought up these results:

-According to wikiask the rivals of the Wild are either the Canuucks or Flames. If they say so, whatever.

-Regarding Golden Gopher football: The Border Battle
The Minnesota-Wisconsin football series is the most-played rivalry in college football history at 110 games. The Golden Gophers hold an all-time series lead of 57-45-8. In 1948, the Wisconsin W Club instituted “Paul Bunyan’s Axe” as a trophy to be given to the annual winner of the grand rivalry between the two schools.

-Ned Yost, MGR for the Brewers, said that the "natural rivalry" with the Twins is not really a rivalry since he has too much respect for the Twins organization and really likes the coaches, plus playing them 2 series a year is not a big deal.

-My own personal experience, would be going to North Star games as a kid and chanting "Secord sucks" at Al Secord of Blackhawks.

I am gussing that the question needs to be reworded to include in-house players and coaches to find someone on the level of Farve. The list of Loathings - these are the people in my neighborhood (who I loathe) on the right hand side of our blog is probably a pretty good list.

Other candidates for No. 2 that I can think of at the moment: Jim McMahon, Norm Green (clear rival for No. 1 in the non-athlete category with Pohlad), Steve Young, Sandy Koufax, Jim Thome.

The Wild and Canucks definitely dislike each other and have a good rivalry going on. They just stole Pavol Dmitra, too.

Random Minnesota sports-related factoid I came across today: Rod Carew is a Marine veteran.

Rod Carew was a marine! That is a surprise ..what kind of crap do you think his marin bussies would have given him for wearing those pink cleats of his?

I hate Favre.. i hate how he took a dive for Strahan and disgraced Gastineau and football in general, I also hate how he cries about the packers not trying hard enough to talk him out of retirement..You were the one that said you wanted to retire you idiot.. you such a f____en drama queen....I don't like losing, but I'd even rather lose with Ferrote then win with Favre...

with that said, my favorite outcome would be that Favre gets traded to the Toronto Argonauts, for 3 sets of shoulder pads and 2 sets of Argonaut season tickets... that is my hope
