Push that rock up that hill, oh Sisyphus

Someone once wrote that "Hell is the impossibility of reason," that's what being a Vikings fan feels like, 'Hell.'

I was one person who did not get all lathered up during the offseason as we made a series of big time moves that made us a Super Bowl "front runner." All over Vikingsland people were calling in to radio shows saying this was the year, we finally have all the pieces of the puzzle, even with TJac we can go all the way. I thought "we're still the Vikings, right?"

Is it time to panic? No. Is it time to blame TJac for the loss? No (although he grades out at a 'C' for his game last night.) Is it a long, long season? Yes. Was that a game we should have, could have won? Yes. Do I hate the Packers? My God, more than ever.

One disappointment last night was my reaction after the game. You see, I spent 4 quarters in front of my t.v. with a calm demeanor. After big plays I wasn't too amped up or too bummed out. There were no hoots and hollers. I uttered the 'f' word only a handful of times. This was a big step in my maturation process. However, on a post game dog walk around the neighborhood with the better half I kind of lost it. I'm sick of losing. I'm sick of not ever being a "champion." I'm sick of the Packers. I'm sick of all the excuses. I'm kind of tired of being a Vikes fan and it's only week 1.

Next Sunday is suppose to be a beautiful day up here in Minny and as we enter Fall/Winter we all know how precious those are. Think I'll set my DVR and play a round of golf or mow the lawn or just stare directly at the sun.

I feel your pain my brother. In fact as the Vikes went down by 2 scores, having accepted the fact that the Vikes were going to lose, I muttered to Dawn "At this point I hope Berrian does not pull in a TD to make this close causing my fantasy team (#3) to lose." Th old me would have cursed until the end.

The game really came down to the big plays that set up the Packers TDs. They had 3 big plays, we had none.

Without the punt return for a TD, we might very well win that game. Jan, I actually applaud your ability to just detach and go do something else during a game. I've gotten pretty close to that point for most sporting events, too.

That said, what would become of this blog if we all just gave up and became mature adults who do things like go for walks or work in the yard on Sunday afternoons? Will we be blogging about the latest Celine Dion album soon?

Invoking the Myth of Sisyphus- has it really gotten that bad?

Such a frustrating game.. the optimist in me saw a lot of good things.. a strong defense that really only gave up a couple of silly big plays, AD looking strong as expected, and the O-Line- given that we were playing with two back-ups at the tackles wasn't the open sieve that I was worried it would be... plus remember TJac didn't play much in the preseason, so we should expect that he's going to come out rusty...right?, right?

By the way, track #5 on Celine's "Taking Chances" has got to be one of her best yet. The way she leaves herself utterly exposed as she reaches down into the underbelly of her own unfounded contempt is really inspiring-- I think this is her most daring album yet and comes closest, of all her English albums, of reaching the divinity innate in all of her French language albums.

LH - thanks for the rosey outlook on a poop of a loss. The problem I had was that the defense had no big plays, if you look at the stats Jared Allen didn't even record a tackle. I bet Zygi sent him a text last night that said "You owe me."

Also, agree with your thoughts on Celine (you old softie.) As you alluded to, her English albums don't compare to her French ones particularly "Les Chemins de Ma Maison" [The Roads to My House] off her album "French Love Songs." Wow! Talk about just putting yourself out there!

I know, I know- but I don't think it is fair to be down on them after only one game...anyone can beat anyone on any given day- just look at Northwestern's vistory over Duke last week for evidence of that.

I'm going to wait until at least mid-October before I start commenting on the season as a whole.

Jan, I see that your knowledge of Celine's music is rather cursory, for while her album "Les Chemins de ma Maison" does, as you sited, translate to "The Roads to My House", using modern day French, one must, if they strive to be accurate, use Canadian Fench when translating Celine's albums, thus "Les Chemins de ma Maison becomes "The Stanley Cup goes through Canada"...

LH, your descriptions bring to mind Christian Bale's character describing the latest from Huey Lewis and The News in "American Psycho."

Wow...this is one of the best chains ever. Laughing out loud, while crying about the vikes loss. Bravo!

Anyway, I had a similar reaction as Jan, on the maturity front (I know, hard to believe coming from me). I expected to lose that game, and said to myself, "we actually responded and made it close." As RTS mentioned, the 3 big plays killed us. Aaron Rodgers didn't beat us...the punt return beat us. I think we'll be okay over the long season...even though we may start 0-2.

LH, easy on the Duke/NU game. This is turning into a top notch rivalry game...I was actually in attendance, which was agonizing on a number of levels, the first of which was the 90 degree temp with 100% humidity. Awesome...I actually predict a .500 season for the Blue Devils. Not yet sure what to think of the Wildcats (and Gophers, for that matter).

Let's hear about those Gophs, eh? Looks to me like they handled Bowling Green nicely, on the road. Didn't they lose to them last year? That sounds like Change I Can Believe In. 3-1 or 4-0 going into the Big 11 season would be a nice improvement. Not that I expect more than a couple conference wins, of course, but it seemed like they didn't even have a legitimate shot at them last year. Also, it appears they may have a star on their hands in Adam Weber. That's good for recruiting.

IMO the Gophers win over Bowling Green was as big of a win as a win over a MAC team can be. 1) The Gophers lost to BG last year 2) The Gophers finished the game strong. Glenn Mason's signature was to blow leads in the 4th qtr. Against BG the Gophers took a close game and blew it wide open. 3) The week before, BG had beaten Pitt on the road.

I'll take Michael Bolton over Celine Dion. To quote Bob Slydell "I'll be honest with you, I love his music, I do, I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman".
