Justin Morneau

This has kind of snuck up on me, but is there a serious chance Morneau wins MVP again? 1st in AL in RBIs, top 7 or 8 in BA, OPS and doubles, only 80 K's on the season, about 70 more RBIs than anyone else on his still-contending team that no one expected to be .500 much less a game and a half back in the final week.

Who are the forerunners this year? Dustin Pedroia? Power doesn't jump out. Carlos Quentin? Missed a lot of time. Milton Bradley? Plays for a horrible team and the writers hate him. Hamilton? Has dropped like a rock. Nobody's having an out of this world season, and Manny's gone to the NL. Without looking too deeply into peripheral stats and the like, it looks like Morneau probably has a legitimate case, at least.

Oh, I just remembered this: if they give it to fucking Francisco Rodriquez, I will flip. He was better two years ago, and a closer should NEVER EVEN BE CONSIDERED FOR MVP. Ever.

Also, just in case no one noticed, Mauer's going to win his second batting title.

1. The chants of "MVP!" started at the Dome last night and I heard Morneau being interviewed after the game saying it got to him a bit but he is focused. Can we just call him "Double Down" from now on? He always seems to drive the ball in the gaps like a mofo. If the Twins make the post-season, he wins the MVP, no question. For Pedroia no doubt it is about the power. I would have said Quentin if he hadn't gotten hurt. And you're right, if it is F-Rod then the award is a joke (totally could see people voting for him to mark the occassion of passing Thigpen.)

2. Can we throw Joes Mijares out there for the 7th and 8th innings instead of Crain/Breslow/Guerrier/Reyes? I have more confidence in a guy I have seen pitch once than dudes I have watched all season.

3. After Kubel's triple last night they flashed a stat that showed we lead the AL in triples. Love it.

4. Hey, Nick Blackburn, you're starting the most important game of your life tonight, how about some magic?

5. I feel like we own Buerhle at the Dome.

Nice point MCA..though given that it seems Morneau barely gets a passing nod in the national mdeia I still think it is unlikely. To Jan's point, if the Twins win the Central, there should be more praise lauded upon him.

Mijares' stuff is impressive...while I'm sure that he can be a bit wild given that he is young and unproven, he gets a lot of movement on his pitches and seems to throw a very hard ball for a lefty...I'm a fan.

I'm certain K-Rod won't win MVP..and he better not win the Cy either...sure he's got a lot of f_ saves, but that's only cause his team put him in that position, I think there should be a new award..call it the Eck award or something like that, that goes the best closer of the year. I don't like these closers (KRod, Riveria a couple of seasons ago) being considered for the Cy....it's just not right.

Go Twins
