Good day to be a Minnesota fan

The Twins won the late night game vs the A's and are now .500 only 1.5 back of the White Sox. MCA's boy Kubel gets the game winning RBI. I should have included Livan in the new face poll as the Twins are now 5-0 when he starts.

The Vikings signed Allen making him the highest paid D-lineman and giving the Vikes arguably the best defensive front in the league. I like the formula in place; run Peterson, run Peterson, run Taylor, run Peterson and then play tough D. I would say boring and grind it out but AP is anything but boring and watching a tough D is great if it is your D. One could only hope that T-Jack has to throw less than 1o times a game. I should clarify, throw down field less than 10 times a game, not counting screens and swing passes to the backs.

Feeling good, maybe too good.

I went to bed after the bloop single from Kubel to give the go ahead run; was excited at that. Got in my car this morning and found all the Vikings chatter on Allen. Nice. This is from the Strib - "Allen, according to the Fox Sports website, will become the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. His new contract will be for six years and just shy of $74 million. Allen told Fox this includes $31,000,069 guaranteed. Allen's jersey number is 69."

That's a lotta meatballs. Not sure why they had to include the jersey number thing, pandering to juveniles I guess.

I liked the move until I read this: "Childress called Allen a 'high-energy guy'"; sounds like someone has a great motor.

Seriously though, I have no problems giving up the draft picks. Think about it rationally, there is no way we were going to get a stud defensive lineman in the draft this year unless we moved up to the top 5 and by doing that you get an unproven rookie and throw just as much cash at him as we did at Allen. Plus, who were we going to get with those 3rd rounders anyway? Tyrone Carter?

Wrestling a franchise player from another team is not easy to do and I, for one, feel like we got a deal.

Agree with RTS, solid run-based offense and a tough D is something I can watch. Biggest problem now is that Birk is holding out.

Did you notice who got 3 RBIs last night and is quietly hitting .300?

The total contract value in football doesn't really matter that much, he isn't going to be with the Vikes for 6 years. It is all about the guaranteed $ and while $31MM is a lot, it's essentially what the Dolphin's just paid for the #1 pick...

We abolsutely have to be able to throw the ball down the field this year... remember what happened to AP's totals the 2nd half of the season after defenses fully schemed to stop the run? In the 6 games that AP played in, he avg. over 4.0 yds per carry only twice, and his final four games looked like this:
wk 14 14 att, 3 yds, 0.2 avg
wk 15 20 att, 78 yds, 3.9 avg
wk 16 9 att, 27 yds, 3.0 avg
wk 17 11 att, 36 yds, 3.3 avg

Plus, we just got done signing a moderate to strong #2 receiver to #1 money (Berrian 6 yrs, $42 MM, $16 guaranteed)...

Time will tell whether these moves will pay off, but it is exciting to see the owner of a MN sport's team actually putting up some money to get talent.. very refreshing.

LH, I love your consistency in defending Monroe. Gotta say that he is looking better than he did 2 weeks ago. That said, Kubel has been money, too.

Guys - love this trade...love this trade...love this trade! Yes, we probably overpaid a bit, but as LH points out, the total value is meaningless...it's all about the guaranteed money, which is exactly what Jake Long just got from the Dolphins. Not only does it fortify our D-line, but it also signals to the fans (for now, at least) that ownership is eager to win now. Again, we basically drafted a top 10 guy (he's 26 years old)...but he's already proven. Bottom line: it was well worth dumping the picks for him. We still have a nice 2nd round slot to work with. Let's just hope he doesn't hit Joe Senser's after practice...

Oh yeah...since I'm the Gophers guy, I feel obligated to let everyone know that Tubby just landed the #1 player in MN (formerly of De La Salle, now of...cough...we don't recruit, I swear...Hopkins). Little worried about his personal track record, as he was booted from De La Salle, but he is the #32 ranked player in the nation. I'll roll the dice.

I totally forgot about Berrian. I must say he is a perfect fit to the run first with the occasional deep ball. Berrian is certainly not know as a possesion reciever, more like all or nothing. My day just got better. Now if Texas executes an inmate I might even get a spring in my step.

Well, the love fest officially started as of yesterday after Allen was introduced to the media. Here is what worries me, everyone is overboard on how relentless this guy is and how he has run with the bulls in Pamplona, killed then gutted a wild boar (seriously), been skydiving etc. these all sound like thing that Demetrius Underwood would have said. Allen is apparently a fun-loving guy who is a jokster and great lockerroom guy. Not one negative word on him (besides the DUI stuff.) Sounds a little too good to be true. . .
