Santana by the numbers

Here is a Spring Training update I came across today.

I never saw the below broken out before:

Twins Starters (without Santana)
Year W-L ERA
2007 44-52 4.62
2006 51-50 5.07
2005 38-48 4.24
2004 39-40 4.52
Total: 172-190 4.60

Santana: 70-32 2.89

And we got 4 prospects for him? The argument of "he only plays every 5th day" no longer means anything.

Just goes to show graphically that we're execting Liriano to put up Santana-like numbers for the next couple years. Assume someone else who will go around .500 steps into his place from the 2006 "other 4 starters" record, attribute Johan's usual 18-6 or so to Liriano, and there you go. Assume the bullpen's 10 games over .500 and you're at 90+ wins if the other four are around .500.

Also, not to poke holes, but I'd like the see the #s 2-5 starter records for other teams, too. Say, Toronto. I would guess these numbers aren't too out of whack with the rest of the league. That's why Johan's called an "ace."

MCA, you're probably right, other teams 2-5's are most likely just as "productive" as ours (our bullpen probably artifically inflates the W's) but I think my point was more that we are now expecting one of the "other 4 starters" to all of a sudden become an "ace" and go 18-6 while competing head to head with the "ace" on another staff when all along we had the real deal in Johan.

Easier said than done to get another Santana out of guys like Baker and Bonser and even Liriano (can take 2 years to get over Tommy John surgery) let alone Phil Humber and his 9 innnings of major league ball (and TJ surgery of his own.)

I don't think anyone is expecting that someone steps up and replaces Santana, though I'm sure they would like it if it happened.

Here's the deal- the Twins are not playing for 2008. Detroit is too good, the Indians are too good, the Red Sox are too good, the Yankees are too good, the Angels are too good, and the Mariners are probably too good....The Twins didn't trade Santana to win the division in '08, they are looking forward to ~2010 when all the pieces (i.e. maturation of young hitters and pitchers on the team and in the system and the new stadium) come together.

No matter what they say, that is the plan- actions speak louder than words.
