Tigers get Caberra and Willis

Damn, the Tigers are loading up. Maybe the Angels get in the Santana picture, now that the Caberra situation is over.

The Yankee fan here is acting all proud "Yankees walked away." I simply responded "Keeping Santana is not exactly a bad thing."

That is a crazy trade for the Tigers. Aside from Santana, Cabrera was probably the most sought after player this off season. Granderson, Mags, Cabrera. Wow. What is their payroll?

Guys, I'm afraid we blew it by not accepting the Yankees' offer. That said, I find it hard to believe that the Yankees will just sit there allowing their arch-rivals to get the best pitcher in baseball. You'd think they'd at least stay in the mix to drive the price up a bit for Boston.

I'm already starting to hate Boston more than the Yankees...

Detroit's deal seals our fate this year. There is NO way we can win in the Central, even if we keep Johan. This convinces me we should make a deal...

I'm feeling kind of bitter right now. Anyone else?

Bitter? Yeah. I'm not worried that we screwed ourselves by not making a deal with the Yankees, Santana is too big a prize. But the fact that the Tigers were able to get Cabrera and Willis is remarkable. Can't they go back to losing 100+ games a season? This will all work out for us, with Cabrera off the market it only strengthen's our position. After the Delmon Young deal, I trust Bill Smith is doing the right thing. Oh, and anyone who says we should just keep Santana and make a run this year is dumber than a mule and twice as ugly.

I'm with jan. 1) Willis was awful last year and has steadily declined after his initial splash. I'm not worried. 2) The Tigers just sold their future in a big way to get Cabrera for a couple years. This will help them compete with Cleveland now, but will open the door for us long term. Cleveland will be unable to pay to keep their nucleus together after another season or two, and Detroit will have no young talent left. With the Twins (hopefully) restocked and very young after our dealings this winter, we're sitting pretty for awhile.

All that said, I am a little bitter because two years ago, when Liriano went down and we still made the playoffs, I targeted 2008 as our best chance. Now 2008 is already blown off.

As I recently was quoted as saying, the last five years we have received the 'Participation Ribbon' in the playoffs. As MCA said, this has got to stop. His target was 2008, even with Liriano out, my target was 2007. Do we now target 2010? BG, you gots to be patient. Think of it like this, it's 1918, the five of us are sitting in a trench in Norther France, the Germans (read: The Tigers) have just thrown a grenade as a precursor to their charging our position, now is not the time to stick your head up and run towards them, let them come to us so we can mow them down over the next decade. If you don't stop the panic, I know Chuck is going to shoot you in the head.

Peter Gammons - "Don't expect to see a Twins-Red Sox or Twins-Yankees whopper. The sense is that Minnesota will hold onto Johan Santana."

So do you think were hanging Santana out there to see if they could get a ridiculous package for him, say Ian Kennedy, Hughes and Melky or Lester and Ellsbury together? Anything less just wasn't going to do it? If so it reminds me of trying to deal with Your Mom in the FFL.

Hopefully the Twins don't take their cues from how I manage my FFL team. Sure, we both have two rings, but from the way this year went you would think I was mailing it in.

This is the exact reason why when this group owns the Twins we are going to need to divide up duties. I'm thinking the lawyer in MCA would be helpful in the negotiations. BG can be the "clubhouse" 'rah-rah' guy (come to think of it, BG might put his money into us buying the Twins on the condition that he gets to sit on the bench.)

Whoever does the wheeling and dealing for us should use a terrific tactic the director of my group uses - stone, cold silence until the other person speaks. It is great in one-on-one meetings (sarcasm font)
