Say 'goodbye' to Garza and 'hello' to Delmon Young

What is going on here?

This is definitely a bit of a head-scratcher, but it works out for us if:

1) We get a big-league-ready starting pitcher in the Johan deal (to replace Garza)
2) Delmon Young doesn't throw his bat at any more umps
3) Liriano comes back healthy and amazing.

It really seems like we've switched our entire focus from winning now to winning in 2010, which seems a bit bass-ackwards, since people will show up to see the new stadium, whether or not the team is any good, whereas people felt we were close to winning last year and we did nothing. I don't totally get it.

In any case, I've accepted the fact that Johan, Torii (and probably Nathan) are gone, so I like the idea of getting Phil Hughes, Delmon Young, Jacoby Ellsbury, Clay Buchholz, or some combination thereof for a run in 2009 and 2010.

I'm so conflicted. I like the idea of bold moves, but I don't like that we've never given Garza the chance we should have and now we're abandoning him. bg, getting a big league ready starting pitcher in the Johan deal is for replacing Johan. Every mental scenario under which I can avoid curling up in a ball and crying when thinking about trading Santana includes three things: Liriano returning to '06 level, getting a young stud pitcher in the deal, and having Garza around as he enters his prime. Oh, and a fourth thing, too - at least four drinks in me.

Sort of unrelated, but so help me higher power, if we come away from a deal with Boston with a guy named after a &%#@ing kids cereal brand partrolling center field for us instead of getting Jacoby Ellsbury, I will rail against the Bill Smith Era for all eternity.

Personally I don't like the trade...and yes the fact that his parent's named him Delmon DaMarcus does have something to do with it.... part of it too is that I don't trust this Bill Smith (if that is his real name)... he makes me nervous with his crazy antics (offering Johan $80MM over 4 years)- at least this offseason isn't dull

I like the move. It is exciting and new, like the Love Boat but without that annoying Gopher guy.

I think we are all a little confused on Garza being in the deal since we expected him to be a #3 guy in the rotation when Santana leaves. However, we have all always said we need another bat in that line-up and Young seems to be the guy. Can't argue with the .288, 13HRs, and 93 RBIs in his first full year. This is a guy that people were saying is the best outfield prospect since Ken Griffey Jr. Take that for what it's worth.

Plus we get rid of Bartlett and his errors and upgrade with Brendan Harris.

Done deal... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/11/28/rays.twins.trade.ap/index.html

I must admit that the thought of 2-5 in the lineup of Mauer, Young, Morneau, Cuddy for the next 5 years is pretty exciting. If Kubel continues to improve, the middle of the lineup is one of the best in the league.

That said, I'm still a little disappointed at losing Garza. I just don't see how Perkins or Slowey have the potential to be more than #3 or so guys, but Garza may have developed into a co-ace.

Does Francisco Liriano have any idea how much we're relying on a little tiny ligament in his left shoulder? If he doesn't come back strong, we've got Trouble.

Maybe I am a sheep, but all of I sudden I feel like the Twins are in a win/win situation. They either keep Santana until near the trading deadline and we can see if they are contenders and deal him if they are not or they deal him now and we bring in the booty and still give it a go.
