Vikes v. Eagles - Eat it Philly

So someone showed up last night and it wasn't That Guy Who Killed All Those Dogs. Welcome the Joe Webb era. Pretty exciting, probably some sort of crushing disappointment looming with him but he looked great last night. How about that run for his tuddy, he's got the shake 'n bake down. Oh, and the Iggles looked terrible. That Guy Who Killed All Those Dogs was really bad, he got flustered when he got hit and threw some bad passes (which we couldn't turn into INTs, which is unreal.) As I texted to BG "The Eagles look like lots of Vikings teams we've had to watch over the years. Lots."

We'll I'm as pleased as I can be for a 6 and 9 Vikings team that has endured. Particularly for this guy.

Wow. Raise your hand if you saw that game coming?!? Anyone with their hand up is lying. I got multiple texts from non-Vikings fan friends saying, essentially: "This looks like a completely different Vikings team." I could not agree more. Not sure what it was, but I have a hunch the guys felt a sense of urgency for earning Leslie Frazier the full-time gig, and from what Chris Collinsworth was saying, they really like Joe Webb and wanted to play hard for him. Not sure if that is true or not, but you could definitely see a difference. It also helps to have all your weapons on offense, and to have your D-Line playing like the 2009 Vikings D-Line.

Jan - great call on the Eagles. That game was essentially Vikes at Panthers last year. Remember that one? Vikes can clinch home field and they crap the bed against a terrible team?

So, the question is this: is Joe Webb the long-term answer? Nobody knows, but I'm guessing the sports talk radio phone lines are ringing off the hook with rubes saying that he's the next Randall Cunningham. Since you asked, here's what I'd like to see them do: draft one of the guys in this year's class (Mallett, Locker, Gabbert, etc.) and trade for a guy like McNabb that can steer the ship for 1 or 2 years while Webb and aforementioned rookie battle it out and develop. Then turn the reins over to them in 2013. Exhibit A for this strategy is Aaron Rodgers...

RTS - congrats on the Iowa win last night. Great game...and now the pundits will have to wait a few days to start piling on the Big Ten for being crappy, slow and overrated.

Problem with my draft strategy is that we need help at other positions (O-line and secondary). That said, I think the window for winning is still open for a year or two, given all our veterans, so I'd love to see us trade for someone like McNabb, Kolb, et al.

Keep in mind that this team may finish 7-9 having caught ZERO breaks all year and with Favre having his worst year ever. Take away a couple of those pick sixes and we're 9-7...wait...they've sucked me back in. Unreal.

One last thing - predictable result in Madison last night. Gophers play tough for 38 minutes and fold down the stretch. Key free throw misses killed them...and it's especially painful to see Jordan Taylor and Jon Leuer combine for 60% of Wisco's points, since they're both MN guys.

Obligatory shout out for my fellow alum Jon Leuer, though. Go Orono!

I don't think that window's open anymore, BG. There's no QB out there you could bring in and be back in the Super Bowl picture for this squad, with its aging defense and o-line. Getting McNabb would make us a 9 to 10 win team, maybe, at a pretty big cost.

Here's an alternate strategy: trade AP for a stockpile of draft picks and/or young defensive players. I love the guy. Love him. So don't get me wrong. I'm just still a big subscriber to "Running Backs Don't Win You Super Bowls, Quarterbacks Do" magazine. No stud rusher carries their team to a title - they always have a top 7 or 8 QB with them. There are very few exceptions to this rule, and I can't think of one off the top of my head other than Walter Payton and that was a quarter century ago now.

I wouldn't oppose trading AP to start the rebuilding process, actually. You are spot on that QBs win titles. RBs do not. Plus, we all know that, with a few exceptions, RBs fade away BIG time as they near 30 years old. We may have gotten his best years already.
