Minnesota Vikings: Draft Comments

Was there a less exciting draft? I didn't really pay attention. The Tebow pick was the most intriguing aspect, according to pundits who then graded us "C -" when we didn't take him. Triplett makes the cut, To quote DTK "That guy is a f'ing magician he got picked that high." can someone please comment on "Big Ten Defensive Rankings" for the past year, RTS maybe? Flipping through the channels there were highlights on some news program showing the end of the Vikes/Saints game followed by "Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees," must have been like what Monica Seles went through when that crazy guy stabbed her (too much?)

I saw that Decker went to the Denver Tebows, so that's probably unfortunate for his career prospects. I also saw the Vikes didn't pick up a QB, and I've learned from local sources in the last three days that Dan LeFevour from Central Michigan is the single most underrated college quarterback of all time and should be pushing to supplant Jay Cutler as the Bears starter by 2012.

Other than that, I have no idea what happened in the draft. Who'd the Vikes even get? Did we address upcoming age issues in the secondary and d-line?

That is the last time I try to swifter under a dresser- man did I get hungry.

Sorry for my absence gentlemen, things were extremely busy there for awhile. I attempted to keep participating but it seemed like every time I was half-way through a comment I'd get interrupted with some annoying work issue to the point that I'd get timed out and forced to start all over, which of course I wouldn't But now that I finally got that healthcare reform bill passed, I now have more free time.

Love the draft, love, love, love the draft- love the NBA draft as well, to bad the MLB can't have the same excitement. Granted it was a little anti-climatic this year given our draft position and dearth of picks, but still fun to read up on the picks and see the outcomes (I only actually watched about 30 minutes of it one day 1).

Vikes traded out of the first round (Detroit took Jahvid Best with the Vikes spot) and picked up the following:

Pick #34 Chris Cook- CB VA. Very tall (6'2"+) for a CB, some question his toughness (he did play in the ACC) but he is athletic and reasonably fast and should be helpful in nickel and dime packages.

Pick #51 Toby Gerhart ("White Lightening")- RB Stanford. Surprisingly fast combine speed given his 230lb frame, a big bruiser of a back- will be interesting to see if he can break tackles in the NFL to any degree that he did in the Pac-10. Scouts say he isn't expected to be turned into a fullback, so expect to see him spell AP and be in there on 3rd downs (he can catch, and given he went to Stanford, I'm assuming he'll be able to pick up blocking schemes)

Pick #100 Everson Griffen- DE- USC. Perennial underachiever at USC- takes plays off- attitude issues etc. Hopefully he will be influenced a little by JA, and will live up to his potnetial, because athletically, he was probably top-15 guy.

Pick #161 Chris Degeare- OL- Wake Forest. Here is what scouting report had to say "DeGeare is a physically gifted lineman who has struggled with the mental aspects of the game as well as college. He missed the 2008 season by being academically ineligible and is not aware of twists, stunts and games up front by the defensive linemen"

Pick #167- Nate Triplett LB, UofM. Big, strong, but not very athletic-will likely not be able to cover down field in the NFL, but could turn out to be a valuable special teams guy.

Pick #199- Joe Webb QB- UAB. Developmental prospect- good size/speed/arm strength, but we will not see him for years, if he makes the team, though he might be used in another role.

Pick #214 Mickey Schuler TE Penn State. Big strong, good blocking tight-end, but not that athletic. Most impressive fact- his dad, also Mickey Schuler, played in the NFL.

Pick #237 Ryan D'Imperio LB Rutgers- also plays fullback.

Well when you put it that way LH, this does not sound like that exciting of a draft for the old Purple and Gold. Reading between the lines, it sounds like Degeare probably would not have gotten into Wake if he were not a football player. At least we were not skipped over for failing to get our pick in on time. The bar is set pretty low for MN drafts (see Darrin Nelson over Marcus Allen and Gerald Riggs, Demitrius Underwood since we had two first round picks why not just waste one, Troy Williamson with the pick obtained for Moss, twice in the Mike Tice era being passed over...).

what target register is troy williamson working at right now? Probably the same one as tony mandarich.

I don't put too much weight in all the experts rankings. Most of them were the kids we imagined beating up when we imagined beating up kids at school.

I like throwing in an occasional gopher pick. If we are going to waste a few, waste em on a local. To RTS point - if i was GM and i saw that the clock was running out and our staff hadn't made a pick, i would run down there and just draft some gopher kid who held the kicking tee. why not make his life a litte better? Here you go kid, you got drafted because we were incompetent. Or i'd pick the guy who stabbed monica seles. i wonder what she did to earn that?
