Did I Mention...

that I had a little bit of seller's remorse about trading Garza, regardless of what Delmon did? I didn't realize the regret would come so soon.

I do recall you saying that Garza never had the opportunity to really show what he was capable of doing. I tried to find the post but was unable to. I did find this gem from Jan:

"the battle for centerfield that is going on right now. Here is the break down that compares Gomez, Span, & Pridie ; gotta say Pridie sounds more ready than anyone else"

To be fair though, two posts earlier Jan called Hernandez this years Ponson.

Yeah, he pitched a gem last night... I looked for the post too, but was unable to find it. I did find this additional gem from Jan though back in March:

"the battle for the presidency that is going on right now. Here's the breakdown that compares Clinton, Obama, McCain and Romney; gotta say McCain sounds more ready than anyone else- you team him with that governor from Alaska (I think her name is Palin) and that's going to be a tough ticket to beat come November- I know they'll have my vote!"

In Jan's defense, he was referencing an article in the Strib from Spring Training that called out Pridie as being 'the guy'; proves he shouldn't believe everything he reads.

I did, in fact, call the McCain/Palin ticket back in March and have enthusiastically supported them ever since.

As for Garza, look, you win some and lose some. I think we all would have rather given up a Perkins or a Blackbrun or even Slowey instead of Garza based on what we saw from him last year. We went out and got a bat and, with hindsight, we gave up a lot to get it thinking it was one of the last "missing pieces." Still too early but I think Delmon has a bigger future than Garza (the score right now is Garza 1, Delmon 0); granted it might not be with the Twins but still. . .

Nov. 27-28, 2007:

"I'm so conflicted. I like the idea of bold moves, but I don't like that we've never given Garza the chance we should have and now we're abandoning him. bg, getting a big league ready starting pitcher in the Johan deal is for replacing Johan. Every mental scenario under which I can avoid curling up in a ball and crying when thinking about trading Santana includes three things: Liriano returning to '06 level, getting a young stud pitcher in the deal, and having Garza around as he enters his prime."

"I must admit that the thought of 2-5 in the lineup of Mauer, Young, Morneau, Cuddy for the next 5 years is pretty exciting. If Kubel continues to improve, the middle of the lineup is one of the best in the league.

That said, I'm still a little disappointed at losing Garza. I just don't see how Perkins or Slowey have the potential to be more than #3 or so guys, but Garza may have developed into a co-ace."

lh didn't like the deal. Jan pointed to the scouting comparisons to Griffey, said (as he's stating now, kudos for rhetorical consistency) this is the price for filling obvious needs at the plate, and operated from the assumption Garza was a No. 3 guy.

I agree with the general assessment that it's Garza 1, Delmon 0 (or Garza 2, Delmon 1 - he did have a fairly solid year, but needs to grow in power and OBP), but that only time will tell the ultimate value of the trade. It's only one year. That said, I sure missed having someone who would step up and shut down the Royals, for instance, the final week of the season, or go 7 2/3 with 3 hits in some of those swooning cold spots we hit in September to pick the team up.

I guess it should be noted that Punto had basically an identical BA to Bartlett this year, and an OPS 35 points higher. He undoubtedly caught more ground balls at shortstop, too. Even Harris had an OPS .30 higher than Bartlett. (Everett not so much).

MCA - You need to call Bill Smith. Very insightful stuff think about how without FTLOSBW you wouldn't have been able to find that your statement to prove that you were right all along. Driving in and hearing on the radio that they are putting Garza in the 3 hole in a 4 man rotation gives him Game 3 at Philly and Game 7 - big games. It probably is closer to Garza 2, Young 1. Young's numbers: BA .290 OBP .336 SLG .405 were decent enough, his 10 HR and 69 RBIs clearly aren't.

Not sure how to take the "kudos for 'rhetorical consistency'" comment - I'll assume that was in a good way.

The argument re: Punto having the same year as Bartlett sure didn't feel that way.

No, totally sincere on the rhetorical consistency thing. You made the same argument yesterday that you did 10 months ago, without having reference to the old post - you don't just go whichever way the wind blows.

The Punto point was totally unrelated and just a tack on. If anything, though, the fact that he and Harris both equalled or bettered Bartlett this season argues in favor of the trade being made, though. He was expendable.

I don't know that Pridie and whoever else we got in that deal are worth anything, though. Especially with Span emerging, there's really no room in our outfield already. Which is why we should trade Kubel or Cuddy.

I agree with the Garza 2:Delmon 1 scorecard. I wonder what it will be in two years- when we should really jusdge this trade. Both players are so young and still developing...and, as we've seen in the past, injuries one way or the other can have a dramatic effect- what if Garza breaks his arm while riding his moped in the off-season?

That being said, effective starting pitching is the most valuable commodity in baseball (other than crazy mascots that is).... and I'd have to really believe in a LFer to trade him for a starting pitcher.... really believe. I said it then, and I'll repeat it here: I think we should have offered the right to Pete Filson rather than give it Garza...but what do I know?

While the rest of America may not care about the series, I like the matchup. Both teams are fun to watch- there should be enough good pitching and HR blasts to keep both afficianados and lay people happy... now will they just watch?
