Saints = Poor Man's Vikings Team

Honestly, that was the kind of Saint's performance that reminded me of our very own Minnesota Vikings. We are the kind of team that would lose on MNF even after returning 2 punts for tuddies. That's the kind of game where we wouldn't be able to get out of our own way to win.

By the way, overlooked is the fact that we own the Saints. Can't say that about too many teams. With last night's win, head to head versus the Aint's we move to: 20-7 and 8-5 on the road against them.

We had no business winning that game. MCA, I hope you actually watched your DVR shortened version...as it was super-entertaining. When I called you last night, Reggie Bush had just run back his 2nd punt for a TD and I was about to launch myself out the window.

Not to get ahead of things here, but our next 3 games are: Detroit, at Chicago, Houston. Definitely winnable...

Jan, I re-wound my DVR and watched Frerotte's interview on the field after the game. Hilarious...clearly he's still punch-drunk from that hit he took.

This offense needs to find a way to open things up for Peterson. I guess I can't complain, though, as they passed downfield when they needed to, as the Saints were loading the box to stop the run.

Let's give a few propers where propers are due:

1. Vikings defense: actually pretty solid following that breakdown to start the game. That Leber pick was huge and you can't say much more about Antoine Winfield.

2. The offense had those 2 huge drives at the end of the game for the tuddy and winning field goal. Granted they went 3 and out on the previous 3 or 4 possessions.

3. Garret Mills recovery of the onside attempt was a 'thinking man's' play.

4. We won.

Even if you can't complete those downfield passes, you'll occasionally get the pass interference call. Like at the end of the game; horrible defense on a pass we weren't going to catch handed us a 30 yard gain and the game. They completed a couple deep balls - if they can build on that, and do it in the first half of games instead of the second, then they can free up some space for AP again.

Frerotte looks like he's having a good time.

bg, I did see those runbacks. Bush is finally coming into his own. I think it just took him awhile to stop swinging for homeruns every time he got the ball - it worked at USC so much that he got to expecting to score a TD every 6 plays.

BY the way, we might need to add a feature to the blog called the "DVR schedule." Essentially, we can all let each other know who is DVR-ing the game(s), and who is watching live. This should avoid awkward phone calls like the one I had with MCA last night:

ME: DUDE, are you f-ing kidding me? (after 2nd Bush runback)

MCA: Silence.

ME: Man, are you watching this game? I can't believe what just happened.

MCA: Taping it...but maybe I won't watch it now, based on this call.

ME: No, no, no. It's a close game. Very entertaining. Definitely watch it. Sorry.

I love Winfield. He really doesn't seem to be that great of a coverage guy, but man he is fun to watch. I believe it was in the 2nd qaurter when he darted around the oncoming fullback to snare Bush in the backfield.....such an athletic move- reminded me of a young Jan at the snack counter.

BG. I saw that interview as well. Frerrote was clearly still feeling the effects of that hit during his post-game interview... it was hilarious. Though I dont see how he can take us to the playoffs, I was impressed with his toughness...

On that note, I don't think I would make a very good NFL quarterback. I know, I know what you guys are thinking: "But your arm LH, it's a cannon" (fastball was recently unofficially clocked at 63mph at Tiger Stadium's fan booth) and I agree, it is, but watching some of those replays last night with the 6'6"+ 280-350lb lineman hunkering down on the opposing quarterbacks I kind of had an epiphany. There is no way I would stand in that pocket and take a hit. I would do no more than a 1 1/4 step dropback before I got that ball out of my hand... which basically means I would through the quick slant... maybe a short skinny post, or 5 and out.. but that is it. There would be no hooks, no out and ups, no post runs.. there is absolutely no way I would stand back there for anything more than 0.9 seconds... and that is only if I didn't "sense" a blitz, in which case you can halve that time.

LH - Have to disagree with you on a couple of points:

1. I would argue that Winfield has always been a good "cover guy" who has developed into a great "cover guy" to almost "shut down corner" status. Heard on the radio on the way in that he has been thrown at 19 times this year, 6 for completions.

2. You would make an excellent NFL QB - not the kind that starts/plays in all the games but more the Jason Garrett type - get dressed, hold the clip board, call some of the plays - you know, 'football mind' kind of stuff. Plus, I have seen you in tight pants and everyday you are not in a football uniform you are unjustly punishing the women (and some men) of America.

No worries, bg. I was only 15 minutes from the first Bush runback, so I didn't have to watch too much in the meantime. I love watching football on DVR - you can get through a quarter of play in like 6 minutes.

Somewhat off the subject, but in line with the disgusting comments re: lh in tight pants - when did the entire league stop wearing thigh pads (and knee pads)? I know they've been getting smaller and smaller over the years, but literally no one wears them anymore. What's up with that? Why wouldn't you want at least a little something there to protect you from Antoine Winfield's shoulder in your mid-thigh? Not to mention spikes in your leg when there's a pile on the ground. These guys have to have some serious bruises on Mondays.
