IU Hoops: Meltdown

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3378521

What an ugly mess Kelvin Sampson left behind. This is tangentially related to FLSBW in that (a) the Gopher hoops program appears to be on the rise, and (b) it is one thing to get better, but something altogether different to actually climb over the teams above you and become part of the top tier of a major conference. The ebb and flow of other programs has to be aligned correctly, too, otherwise the temporary excitement of a new coach/philosophy/facility/whatever will wane if there's no tangible change in terms of pecking order and you'll stop getting the types of recruits necessary to take it to the next level. Well, one of the traditional powerhouses of the Big Televen, over whom the Gophs would need to step to reach the top tier for the first time since forever, has essentially displaced themselves from the upper echelon of the conference for at least the next 3-4 years. Couldn't have timed it better from a window of opportunity perspective. Tubby: kick them while they're down. Hard. Right in the crimson and cream. Couldn't have happened to a nicer program.

What is disgusting in all of this is that Sampson went and got a job with the Milwaukee Bucks. Great lesson NCAA! A coach can violate the recruiting rules which causes a collegiate program to go down in flames get a buyout from the University you just screwed over to "make the problem go away" and then get a job in the NBA.

I am loving every second of this. Mostly because I hate IU and all of the people that went there, but also because Crean had a sweet setup at Marquette and is probably now regretting leaving.

BTW, that SI fan poll about baseball stadiums is total bullshit. They had the Brewers' "neighborhood" ranked higher than the Dome's. Now, the dome isn't exactly in Wrigleyville, but it's walking distance from numerous bars. Miller park is out in the burbs, surrounded by acres of parking lot. Also, they ranked the atmosphere #5 at Miller...ummm, have you seen a game there? I literally almost fell asleep it was so quiet (granted, this was a few years ago, before they got good.

Oh well, I guess I'm just committed to proving that Wisconsin is minor league in everything except football.
