Gophers / Sioux Throwdown

Guys, I heard about this, but I obviosly hadn't seen the footage. If it weren't for the Super Bowl, I'm guessing this would have made more of a splash on the national scene (though it was on the top of Deadspin today, which is a generally good site, growing in popularity).

Best line: "You'd think he would have dropped the gloves and done something a little more manly than tug on his jersey" - the MN play-by-play guy after a Sioux player re-started the fisticuffs in the post-game handshake line.

In any case, it got me fired up.

Watched this on Saturday night. Turned the t.v. on at the end of regulation to catch all the action. It was pretty good stuff. It was Doug Woog who made the comment. Basically, the Sioux came off as a bunch of babies looking for a fight that the Gopher's weren't sure (at first) that they wanted to get into (few scraps earlier in the game where Gopher players weren't defending each other as quickly as they should have been.) It was an ugly check in the back to Baribal that got most of it going. I was with my in-laws and some of Sarah's aunt's and uncle's we were all yelling for blood.

That was like a scene right out of Slap Shot. By the time Lucia got back to the locker room, I picture a big pile of foil on the floor.

js, I'm pretty sure that was Mazzocco who made the initial comment. He's probably more likely to say something pithy like that than Woogie, who (true to his nature) isn't much on emotion in his announcing style.

Regardless, UND has been getting annoyingly chippy for a couple years now. I never figured Hakstol was as big an offender as his team, though. Nice class, dude. The Sioux were lucky as balls to win Friday night, on a crazy-ass diving hack at the puck out of thin air in overtime, so there's no excuse for coming out guns blazing 10 seconds into this one. It sounds like it took us off our game, though. The Gophs should have been fired up to win Saturday. To get just 1 point out of the weekend (for the second weekend in a row) is not good. The top talent is just decimated right now. The atrocious power play is evidence - that's where you put your best scorers, and apparently ours can't score against 4 defenders more than once every 20 tries.

MCA, you're right, misheard it. But Woog did have the quote "Well the whole rubarb at the end was (a) Sioux initiated." Love hockey announcers.

What's great is that you know these teams will meet again in the WCHA championships.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) -- University of North Dakota men's hockey coach Dave Hakstol has been suspended for two games and reprimanded for profane language and a gesture he made at a referee during a heated Saturday night game with Minnesota.
