2 quick rants

I somehow actually managed to find a couple of moments yesterday to watch part of the outdoor hockey game (Both bowl games I was watching must have been at commercial). It was pretty sweet. On Espn today they showed highlights of prior outdoor games. The first college game they highlighted was Michigan State/ Michigan at Spartan stadium. The second one was Wisco vs Ohio State, which the anchors referred to as ANOTHER BIG TEN MATCH UP. Ummmm as far as I know, there is no Big Ten in college hockey. Did the writer not know or did they dumb it down for your average non-college hockey fan or did they just make an off hand comment and I flew off the handle for no reason?

Second thing, going back to the good guy bad guy debate, I was disappointed to see Fran Tarkenton do the pre-game show for the Sugar Bowl. He is not exactly known as the most reputable guy in the financial world. I have seen the spam emails from his firm, the kind of stuff you see and wonder who does this work on? City pages claims he tried a pump and dump scheme costing Irwin Jacobs some cash:

I guess I never knew Tarkenton was such a douchebag.

I read through that list from City Pages. Found this about Donald Igwebuike (how did I miss this?):

"Igwebuike was suspended midway through his short tenure following his arrest on charges that he had bankrolled a million-dollar heroin-smuggling operation from his native Nigeria. The chief evidence came from one of Igwebuike's friends, who was arrested at Orlando International Airport with half a pound of high-grade heroin in his bowels. After striking a plea bargain, the man testified against Igwebuike in a federal trial. Igwebuike was acquitted by a jury."

rts - you know more about college hockey than 99% of the people working at ESPN just by reading the occasional on-topic e-mail or post from yours truly. I guarantee that's an unintentional mistake of ignorance on the announcer's/writer's part. SEC Hockey - it's Faaaantastic!

Speaking of which, a word briefly on Gopher hockey: Already officially in a rebuilding year, having lost a bunch more guys to the NHL and then their best remaining player to a season-ending injury the first weekend, things have gotten worse. Kyle Okposo left for the Islanders - he was the best all-around player left on the team. We just lost to RIT and tied with Air Force. In our own tournament. Yikes. This will easily be our worst season under Lucia.

In related news, the WCHA is pretty down this season overall. Only Denver and CC can claim to be contenders at this point. The CCHA right now looks as dominant as the WCHA was from about 2002-2006. Michigan, Michigan State (defending champs), Miami and Notre Dame are all very good at the moment. Which sucks from a WCHA-centric standpoint, of course, but at least the midwest is still making east coast hockey somewhat irrelevant.

Back to the Gophs, something needs to be done from a recruiting standpoint to determine how to keep guys at the U. 2-3 of our top guys leave early every season now. We could reload for awhile, but it's now finally caught up to us. They're not even staying two years now, and you just can't have that much turnover and expect continuity, too. This is a nationwide issue to an extent - college hockey's becoming too much like the college hoops scene.

I had heard some unflattering things about Tarkenton in the past, but couldn't remember them. Probably met some sleazos in his Hollywood days of "That's Incredible" and still hangs out with them.

Did you see the comment from the Islander's on Okposo's reason for leaving? Basically said that the Islander's have too much invested in Okposo for him to be coached the wrong way in Minnesota and pick up bad habits from Lucia. So Lucia, who has two NCAA Championships, two WCHA titles and four WCHA Final Five crowns is the reason Okposo is struggling this year. Yeah, I get it.

MCA- I had seen that the Gopher was making the jump to the NHL, literally the only piece of college hockey I have seen until you caught me up. I think it was the day after Gabrik's 5 goals and 1 asst, when the blog was in a blackout period.
