Everyone Ready for A Season off from Rooting for The Vikings?

Apparently, it's all over but the press conference now. Talk about a no-win situation as a fan.

Friend of this blog Brett Shogren recently stated that he is "all in" with the Vikings if Favre comes on board. This from a man who has more anger in his little finger on an average day when it comes to the Vikings than the entire Gauck household the day Denny took a knee.

Wow...it is disturbing that Northwestern finished behind Kentucky. I have no issue finishing behind the U. Some smart kids there, ya know.

So, it appears that if Favre is healthy enough to throw, he'll be a viking. Also, it appears there is no "deadline", as reported by ESPN this morning.

For what it's worth, friend of this Blog Mike Shaffer and other grad school buddies of mine thought I was NUTS for not wanting Favre. They didn't think it was a deal with the devil at all...pretty stunning. I even positioned it as the Chiefs picking up Elway and that did nothing to dissuade him from saying I should be 100% on board.

Here is the latest from PFT:

Pat Kirwan of Sirius NFL Radio has refuted an ESPN report today that Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress has established a deadline of this week for Brett Favre to join the team as its starting quarterback for this season.

According to Kirwan, no such deadline exists for Favre.

As Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune noted, Kirwin is close to Childress. So, the former NFL executive may have some inside information on this one.

Per the Star-Tribune, here’s what Kirwan had to say about Favre on his radio show today:

“I heard you talking about Brett Favre, every show has been talking about him. I’ve got a couple of things to say. First off, let me make sure I’m clear on this to everyone who is listening. There is no deadline for Brett Favre to come in by Friday. There is zero deadline. The story was made up, it’s not true and trust me on that.”

Kirwan projected that Favre could join the Vikings by the middle of next month or even sooner as he recuperates from recent arthroscopic shoulder surgery to address a partially torn biceps tendon.

“Favre is on his way to Minnesota and it may be around July 15,” Kirwan said. “It might be earlier. Remember how we said first Step 1, ‘Is he healthy enough to play?’ He’s in the process of having that resolved. Step 2, get a contract done. We don’t think that’s going to be a problem either so the first two hurdles are going to be easy to fly over and then come in and be part of this program.

“With the OTAs winding down, and maybe that’s a good thing because he’s not ready to throw, and all the business that goes on with football. Maybe it’s better if he comes in at a quiet period of time and gets ready to roll. But I think you’re right on it, I think he’s on his way in. Friday may come and Friday may go and it will have nothing to do with him in a purple uniform.”

Interesting take. We’ll find out soon enough whether there really is a firm deadline or not.

Seriously BG, NU came in THIRD? Guess you guys should hit the books a little harder.

Back to Favre. Hilarious that Chilly gave him the 'tell us by the end of the week' deadline. This from a guy who, down by 2 scores to the Titans, decided to punt the ball with 4th and 13 and from his own 18 and then offered: “Based on the way we were playing defense, I thought we’d have a chance to get it back.”

Shaff, if you're reading this, I love 'ya, man, but it seems like we disagree on practically everything when it comes to sports. This included. I think the proprietors of this humble little blog take a different view than any non-Viking fan could, and admittedly a different view than perhaps a majority of Vikes fans, too. It's easy to see this from the outside, with no emotional attachment to the team at issue, and no particular history with the player at hand, and see it as a simple 1+1=2. That discounts what it is to be an actual fan of a sports team, and the irrational, emotional ties that go with it. The question that all fans must always ask is this: I want to win, but at what cost?

The answer for some teams' fans (Dallas, Oakland come to mind) is simple: any cost. We don't see it that way. Vikes fans are a bit more romantic/idealist/stubborn than that.

To flip BG's analogy for a Denver fan, imagine that the Broncos hadn't gotten the job done with Elway. In fact, they suffered an epic collapse in the '98 AFC Championship. They're still pining for that first Super Bowl victory. Now imagine the Chiefs, the Broncos' staunchest rivals, had made a couple Super Bowls and won one, with Trent Green as their QB. Now imagine Trent Green was a sanctimonious narcissist of otherworldly proportions and the biggest phony you've ever seen. Also, imagine that Trent Green had gotten more media dry humping during the course of his career than any player since, um, well, ever. Seeing Trent Green in his Wranglers ads makes you physically ill.

The checklist of "What It Means to Be A Broncos Fan" has, for the last twenty years, included two items: hating the Chiefs, and rooting against Trent Green. Is Trent Green the guy you want leading the Broncos to their first Super Bowl?

Now, imagine the Broncos want to pick Green up, off his SECOND retirement in as many years, after a season in which he (i) absolutely fell apart in the second half and lost his team a spot in the playoffs, and (ii) was a total locker room cancer. This coming two seasons after he made one of the dumbest decisions in a career full of dumb decisions to cost his team a trip to the Super Bowl.

So, you've got a pretty good chance (I'd say 50%) that from a Wins and Losses perspective, this move does nothing or blows up in your face. You've got probably a 40% chance you get an extra regular season win and/or a playoff win out of it. That leaves you about a 10% chance of getting to the Super Bowl, and a 5% chance of winning it because of the move.

Some Vikings fans are OK with losing their Super Bowl virginity to some skanky chick who's been around the block, including sleeping with the meathead bully everyone hates the last three semesters. It's worth it to get laid, they feel. We'd rather find a nice girl we can respect. Call us old fashioned if you will. We just want that first time to mean something. To feel otherwise means you're not a real fan.

Honestly, those last five paragraphs may be the best ever written in blogdom. I feel like we should send in to the STRIB or Deadspin or Winter Park or something.
