Vikes Win Open Thread

1. T-Jac with some seriously nice throws yesterday. I don't think Favre could have thrown it any harder than Tarvaris did on that TD to Rice.
2. AP is now in "You can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him" territory. Could get over 1,800 yards on the ground for the season.
3. Jared Allen at 14.5 sacks.
4. Is Chilly starting to take the training wheels off the offense? I do think they should have taken a shot at the end zone up 21-0 with 2nd and 2 at about the Arizona 40 early in the second quarter (IIRC). But I can't complain.
5. Y'all certainly look correct on your predictions that the Cardinals would come out with a clinching hangover.
6. Berrian has started earning his $$ the second half, no? I'd like to see him in an offense (i) with a solid possession receiver or upgrade over Shiancoe, (ii) that likes to throw somewhere in between the 5-yard slant and the end zone bomb.

Almost forgot:

7. Bears have to win out and have us lose both, or we win the division.

8. The Giants are now in a dogfight for homefield advantage, and the division's not even locked up yet (I think), so they might actually be trying Week 17. That said, it almost looks like Atlanta might be the tougher game than the Giants right now, given how they've looked the last two weeks. If the Vikes can somehow slow down Turner and win this game, they'll look like they're for real, having beaten a top passing team and a top running team in succession, and having gone on a 9-2 run.

9. Perhaps what Jan meant by "New Look" was just "peaking at the right time."

When was the last time you watched a Vikings team do that? 10 years I'll bet.

1. Did you see AP on the bench before the start of the 2nd half? He was talking to himself and said a prayer that you know was something like "let me keep running all over them."

2. Did you see Allen on the sidelines after he got rolled up on? He looked like he had been hit in the head with a sledgehammer and he sort of got his senses about him and laughed it off. He is like that one water buffalo who fights back and kills a bunch of lions.

3. TJac? Not going to go overboard but those were some pretty balls.

4. There was such calm, cool f'ing swagger on the field yesterday. Everyone was playing hard, having fun. Everyone was contributing. Wow.

5. I don't think this team is taking any games off. Bring on the Falcons.

While I like seeing the Vikes get there props, did anyone see the Jared Allen segment on Mayne Street durning NFL Game day? terrible. But if that is all I can complain about, I will take it.

Looking forward, on paper the Vikes should take the Falcons out. The Falcons are 3-4 on the road vs 6-1 at home. Turner averages 117.71 yards at home but only 85 yards on the road. I think the Vikings hold Turner in check, but give up 1 long Td to either Norwood/White or Jenkins. On O we all know what we are going to see. I am going with the Vikings 20-17, but the Falcons are chasing by 2 scores most of the game.

Good chatter, guys. I just can't remember the last time we comfortably blew a team out. I have to admit, however, that I was a bit nervous after the blocked FG returned for a TD. T-Jack and the offense responded, though. I totally agree that we need to throw something other than 5-yarders and 40 yard bombs.

MCA, with regard to the Giants, the winner of the Carolina/Giants game next Sunday earns home field, as whomever wins will have a one game lead over the other AND the head-to-head tie-breaker.

Get this, though...if the Giants lose to Carolina and we beat Atlanta, we'll be playing for the #2 seed. Alternatively, if the Giants win and we win, we could get the #2 seed with a win over the Giants and a Carolina loss at New Orleans in week 17. Hold on...I need to go take a quick cold shower. Okay - back to reality. We need to actually beat Atlanta before any of this becomes relevant. I could see the Bears winning out for some reason (although at Houston is a tough finale), so we cannot let down vs. the dirty birds.

I also saw AP saying a few prayers and hail mary's before the 2nd half. Loved it...but he needs to start hanging on to the ball. He's scaring me a bit...

P.S. When was the last time the Vikes were described as "playing well / peaking at the right time?" Old Look Vikes would have started 8-1 but would still be sitting at 9-5.

Thanks, bg. I actually was wondering about the Giants/Cowboys tiebreakers; after last night, they're two games apart with two left, and Dallas won at least once head to head, so they'd be on to other tiebreakers between the two of them that I don't have the energy to look up if they both finish 11-5.

Jan, you might want to re-word your point #3.

Also, apparently we all have very short memories due to years of crushing Viking fan existence: we embarrassed the eventual Super Bowl champions, and then trounced the Lions 42-10, in Weeks 12 and 13 last year.

I could have proclaimed we were peaking at the right time then, too, when we had won 5 in a row heading into Week 16 before laying that egg against the 'Skins, so sorry for that jinxing.

The peak probably was a lower peak last season, though.

Have we played the Falcons in the Dome since that one game you may remember? Is this a factoid game? Will jan be there with a burning effigy of Chris Chandler?

MCA -

Good catch on TJac's pretty balls.

As I stated on December 3, 2008 in my "bold prediction" segment -

"Three of the next four games are 'Factoid Games' and for the 'New Era Vikes' I like us in these 'Factoid Games. . . '

Finally is the game against the Falcons and I don't got to tell you how that ended."

Most definitely a 'factoid game' and who likes us in 'factoid games'? I do.

Re: today's news: need we point out the coincidence that had Pat Williams been serving a suspension in Sunday's game, which we would have won easily without him, he would not now be out for potentially 6 weeks with a shoulder injury. Ugh.
