A Look Back: Thanksgiving 1998

Let's, for a moment, separate the Vikings v. Cowboys Thanksgiving game from the memories of how the 1998 season ended and take a look back. Considering how far we have come from Denny :: Tice :: Chilly, from offensive juggernaut to a team built around a defense, from Cunningham to Ferrotte, it is amazing that this game actually happened and is part of us as Vikings fans.

Let's breakdown the numbers, you can relive most of the action from memory.

The day started as the 10-1 Vikes, who had locked up a playoff spot, met the 8-3 Cowboys who were leading the NFC East. The day ended as the Vikes won 46 to 36.

Cunningham was 17 of 35 for 359 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT.
Moss had 3 catches for 163 yards and 3 TDs
Carter had 7 catches for 135 yards and 1 TD
Leroy Hoard rumbled for 58 yards (50 of those on one carry) and 2 TDs

Remember how those numbers (maybe not Hoard's) were pretty much standard operating procedure? Here is something you don't say too often: what a great Vikings win.

Dang, that was a decade ago?

I remember watching that game at my uncle's outside Philly. Every time Cunningham heaved one toward the end zone we all held our breath and then went crazy when Moss inevitably came down with it. It was like schoolyard football.

Talk about the ultimate deep threat: 163 yards, 3 TD's on THREE CATCHES!!! That combo of Moss and Carter, in retrospect, may have been the best 1-2 punch in modern receiving corps history. We had no idea how spoiled we were, did we?

Wait, how did that season end?

I remember madden just gushing over Moss in Brett Farve like manner. If I remember correctly Moss was rather cold in the post game interview.

I know we have been down this road more times than we can count but with stats like that why the heck did Denny take the knee against the Falcons? What more could he have wanted?

The biggest thing about that team was how quickly the sun set on them. The next year it was all over. Their was no dynasty, the were just a blip on the radar.

We are suppose to relish that win, not lament the season. Guess you can take the fan out of 1998 but you can't take 1998 out of the fan.

Fellas, I distinctly remember that as well. If I recall correctly, Dallas was the team that Moss wanted to draft him. When they, very publicly, passed on him, it became his mission to light them up...and light them up he did. As a result, I think his post-game remarks were very bitter. I'll have to look it up on Youtube.

Seriously...we used to routinely score 35+ points per game. Last night was almost weird to watch.
