Remember me? Bob Schnelker

Yes, the "worst offensive coordinator in Minnesota Vikings history" or at least that is how he is remembered. Not really sure the stats prove it out, they probably don't, but if the Vikings offense is stalling or we are running the ball over and over and over or if we are getting 3 points instead of 7 points, then it's Schnelker's name we bring up.

From a Wikipedia search on Jerry Burns:
"During his time as the Vikings head coach, he may be best remembered for a November 12, 1989 profanity laced tirade where he defended then-offensive coordinator Bob Schnelker, despite the fact that the Vikings kicked a league record-tying 7 field goals in a 23-21 defeat of the Los Angeles Rams."

Here is the audio - wow, I miss Jerry.

Also, 7 field goals! Holy crap that must have been an infuriating game to watch. Probably the game that sealed Schnelker's fate in Vikings history.

Tears are streaming down my cheeks, I am laughing so hard. That should be a permanent fixture of the site. If anyone can dig up the Uncle Burnsie bedtime stories I will be in your debt. I assume Burns was talking about Alfred Anderson in reference to the shoe.

I think Schnelker stuck to the formula of 1st and 10 run, 2nd and 8 run, 3 and and 6 pass and never mixed it up.

RTS - I have the Uncle Burnsie bedtime stories on tape somewhere, I come across them every couple of years (that and all the classic KQRS bits circa 1990.) I will find a way to get them online somehow.

Classic. Can you IMAGINE this happened in today's media age instead of 20 years ago? This would make Mora's "Playoffs?" thing look like story time at the children's bookstore. People still make a huge deal about that one press conference Denny gave with Arizona about the Bears, but it was really nothing. Compare that to this - Burnsie sounds like he's literally ready to strangle someone.

I've got those old Best of the KQ Morning Crew tapes, too. I think they'e in a box in my garage. No idea how to get them online, though. In fact, I don't even have a tape player in the house, so they may as well be on vinyl or 8-track. I'll send 'em to you for X-Mas to make a copy if you like, rts.

If you listen closely to Burnsie, at the very end he says "They put his picture up there and the f'ers boo him" and then like 3 seconds later he just says "f'ers" into the microphone like he was walking away but at the last minute decided to come back and just say "f'ers" one more time.

Anyone take Burnsie over Childress? I would.

I appreciate the offers, but I found another blog with the Uncle Burnsie Night Before Christmas. It is not as funny as the original tirade.

Also here is the video of the original tirade unbleeped. It is sideways if you can bear to watch it:

One more thing, here is an article on the game from the NY Times:

That video stirred up a couple of things:

1. The names he mentions - Tim Irwin, Hassan Jones...memory lane.

2. The guy who asks Burnsie about Schnelker is resdient fat-ass Patrick Reusse; I know that crackling voice anywhere.

3. The next video that popped up was the last play of the 1987 NFC championship game. Motherf'er!!! I was skiing with my family in Montana and remember riding up on the chair lift thinking "I hate Darrin Nelson."

Guys,
Amazing post...I feel like I am 17, driving in my Toyota Camry to hopkins high school. If this had happened in 2007, Burnsie would be a cult hero (and would be the only guy ever to star in those coors light commercials).

As a lifelong Packer fan, you guys probably don't want me commenting on this blog, but here goes.
Schnelker's reputation of playing calling in Minnesota contradicts the (at the time) recording setting offenses from '82-'83 he presided over in Green Bay. Remember Dickey, Lofton, Coffman, Jefferson? Yeah sure, they had no defense. But they sure were fun to watch. Did Schnelker get conservative with his play-calling during his years in Minnesota?
