Brewster boycotts KFAN

Heard on the radio this morning that Tim Brewster has prevented any of his players or coaches from going on KFAN to talk to any of the radio personalities. I don't have a link to a news story or anything but they spent about half an hour on it. Apparently Dan Barreiro was specifically cited for his 'negativity.' How f'ing stupid is this? This is a D-1 football coach saying that nobody can talk to the biggest (and, really, only) sports-talk radio station around these parts. Grow up, Tim. Would Pete Carroll do this? "Hey, nobody talk to that KFAN, they've been critcal of our program and don't cover us enough on their station." Great way to expose your players and coaches to what it's like to be an adult and a professional. I'm sure Maturi really wants negative publicity around the football program right now too.

I am guessing after the beating Cal is going to lay on the Gophers this weekend, people may not even remember this.

This is a key aspect of Brewster that I really question. The guy is a great recruiter and an enthusiastic guy that was a perfect fit for a program that need a jolt of energy three years ago. That being said, I think his incessant optimism in year 3 has gotten a little annoying. In addition, the worst case scenario is that he is Ron Zook part II - great recruiter, awful coach. I really hope this isn't the case, because the Gophers have a ton of talent right now, they just need to convert that talent into wins on the field. It seems silly that Brewster would essentially bite the hand that feeds him (the only sports radio station in town). This is how Glen Mason became so unpopular...he always made excuses to the media and complained about them. Get over it! THIS IS DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL! THIS IS THE BIG TEN, BROTHER! (to quote Dan Hawkins from CU).

This is the best idea for a boycott since the religious right successfully outed that gay teletubby. Come on, Smalltime. We wear caps and sleeves in this league. In fairness, he did just beat one of the best football teams in the country based at a military academy, so maybe he thinks that earns him the right to control the press.

Prediction from a cynic: there is no "ban" here at all. The coach said something about not wanting players being distracted or pulled some minor aspect of their access to the program (given my recollection of KFAN from 15 years ago, such access is never used anyway - if it weren't for the Vikes that intellectual deathhole wouldn't exist, anyway). KFAN whined and bitched, like sports talk radio does.

Also, countervailing opinion: No one gives a fuck about KFAN, anyway. I think Jan's like half their audience most of the time, and everyone who listens to sports radio takes all the negativity with a massive grain of salt. They can moan all they want, it won't reflect poorly on Brewster.

Shogren, excellent posting name. I think I'm inspired to come up with something a bit more titillating that my initials.

MCA - because tone doesn't always come across in posts, what does "I think Jan's like half their audience most of the time" mean?

Ahh, verbal tics spilling over into written posting. Sorry for the sloppiness. Would never intend to link you to the average talk radio listener. Take out the word "like." What I meant to say was that, if I recall correctly, you listen to the station sometimes, but my guess is that you're one of few. Knowing you, you probably spend most of the time you do listen to KFAN thinking to yourself "these guys are such idiots; Why don't they say anything intelligent?" anyway.

I'd guess a lot more people get their Gopher insights from 'CCO than KFAN. Anyone younger than us barely knows what a radio is, and to the extent they do, they have no idea what this "AM dial" thingy is.

is that the AM means on my radio dial?.. I always thought it was some existential statement on life by those Germans...I never really questioned it, because my upbringing never nurtured my sense to question that which I don't understand.

I'm not so certain that Cal is going to lay it on the Gophers.... I mean, maybe they will what do I know. I know they crushed the Terps, but they're not expected to be much this year anyway- and I don't think we can get any insight from their victory over Eastern Washington.

All I know is that I feel more optimistic about this game (and our defense) than I did 2 years ago when I was sitting next to Jan and BG in Berkley watching Cal work over a terrbily slow, undersized gopher defense.

It might just be the optimist in me, but I gotta think we can be more competitive this Sat.

Here is my take as a long time listener to KFAN:

1. The station defines "Sports Rube" when it comes to most of their callers. These are the same people who were shouting for Todd Bouman to start in place of Daunte in his prime. Grain of salt.

2. KFAN is the home of the Vikes so it is pretty much Vikes talk 365. There is one good program (it's actually Barreiro's show as it is more than sports and he is entertaining/educated.) Aside from Barriero, there really is no negativity, it's mostly unbridled optimism (particularly when it comes to the Purple.)

3. The whole controversy over Brewster not allowing people to go on KFAN will undoubtedly come out as a "misunderstanding" I'm sure. However, I'm also sure that Brewster did tell players and coaches to not go on the air. He's becoming that kind of guy.

4. Yes, 'CCO is the home of Gopher sports but honestly how can you bear listening to Sid and Dave Mona?

5. Sports radio on general = junk. I do, however, listen to it because, well, I'm me.
