Slowey+ Surgery = no more pitches in 2009

Not good for a rotation that looks awfully thin right now.

I wonder how this is going to play out up until the trade deadline. Team is desperately in need of another arm and another bat/glove in the infield (please sign Freddy Sanchez so I don't have to hope Alexi somehow discovers his love of baseball again.) Ever think you'd be getting an "Anthony Swarzak 4 Evr" tattoo?

No joke... if he keeps pitching like he did last Sunday, I'm going to put it on my forehead.

Sanchez and an arm (ok really 2 arms given the starter and bullpen needs, but we all know that is unrealistic- of course Sanchez and an arm is probably unrealistic too, but a man has got to dream)...is that too much to ask?

One of the problems is the general lack of quality arms out there beyond Halladay. So many teams are still in the race this year that no one's offloading pitching.

A Sanchez deal won't be forthcoming, IMHO. We'd have been good trade partners for the Pirates, but they've moved too many guys now that the Laroche deal is done. I think we had our chance.

I know this is totally ridiculous to even propose, but why wouldn't we at least throw together a package for Halladay?!? I mean, we're 3 games out in a crappy division, and we're moving into a new stadium next year. If ever there was a time to mortgage the future a little bit (as Morneau said - who decides when it IS the future?), it is right now!! The Jays are probably hoping to avoid trading him within their division, and I'm guessing he wants to go to a team in the race. I know, I know...it will never happen. I ask Bill Smith: WHY NOT?!? We have a good farm system that presumably contains some attractive prospects, right?

Freddy Sanchez. Yes. How about Scutaro from the Jays as well? Bill Smith, oh how your frustrate me!

What do we all think about the clubhouse rumblings by the "Trident of Talent" (Mauer/Morneau/Nathan) about the organization needing to make moves in order to KEEP Mauer happy? I like it. For too long there has been a silence from the clubhouse (most likely instilled by Gardy and the staff) that we do things "The Twins Way" and don't make waves. We've watched guys like Hunter and Santana go (granted those were two of the larger ticket items) but finally M&M are leaders and entering their prime baseball years and they want to win, can you blame them? Have you asked yourself how you will feel with a Mauer-less Twins team in a new stadium? Can you say "100x worse than when KG left"? I knew you could.

The only deadline deal I can think of was Matt Lawton for Rick "2.4 HR per 9 innings" Reed. It did not work out but at least the Twins tried to make a push. At the very least the Twins need to add an arm to the bullpen.

Shannon Stewart deal.

The Shannon Steward trade was huge- he played really well for us down the stretch and all we gave up was Bobby Kielty (aka Ronald McDonald)... we"d do that again, all day long.

I read that article too, and was equally glad to see the players speak up. Usually I'm against players venting their frustration through the media, but given the historical lack of action, I think it was time that someone said something. If they can use Mauer in this way, then great.

By the way, if we were trading for team MVP now instead of at the ALL-Star break, my vote would firmly be with Morneau...I was a tweener at the time and admittedly, probably got a little caught up in Mauermania. Morneau has once again been huge so far this year.

For the record, I voted for Morneau because he (and Kubel) carried us in April and May until Mauer showed up. The longer we go, with Mauer behind the plate every day, the more Morneau needs to outhit him the rest of the season, though, to be MVP at the end of the campaign.

I forgot about Shannon Stewart. I remember most of these guys those:

In the final season indoors, the Twins announced their All-Metrodome team. The roster includes manager Tom Kelly; starters Bert Blyleven, Brad Radke, Johan Santana and Frank Viola; relievers Rick Aguilera and Joe Nathan; C Joe Mauer; 1Bs Kent Hrbek and Justin Morneau; 2B Chuck Knoblauch; SS Greg Gagne; 3B Gary Gaetti; OFs Tom Brunansky, Dan Gladden, Torii Hunter and Kirby Puckett; DH Paul Molitor.

Why 2 first basemen?

Hrbek's #'s over 14 seasons:
BA - .282
OBP - .367
SLG - .481
HRs - 293
RBIs - 1,086
MVPs - 0

Morneau #'s over 7 seasons:
BA - .285
OBP - .354
SLG - .510
HRs - 159
RBIs - 606
MVPs - 1

Who do you take?

And do we really claim Molitor to be a Twin? He played 3 of his 21 years here (yes, I get it, he went to CDH.)

I guess I take Morneau based on the superior stats and MVP award, but I must admit that Hrbek's are closer than I would have thought. If Morneau hits like he is this year for another five before starting to noticeably decline, then it's a no-brainer. He'll have way more RBIs and homers. But for the time being, he's played half as long, and is close in OPS to Herbie and half way there in homeruns. Surprising.

No, I would not claim Molitor. The only trouble is that, other than him, the best DH the Twins have had in the Humpdome Era is probably, uhmmm, aahhhh, hmmmm ... I don't know. Randy Bush? You wonder why we're historically so reliant on pitching? There's your answer.

I guess I should also have noted that Hrbek got a fast start to his career, and could easily have been AL ROY back in '81 (I think - he lost to Ripken, if I recall correctly). Morneau, on the other hand, had a decent start back in '04, followed by a total sophomore slump the next year. So maybe his first 7 years' output is lower than it should be by comparison to Hrbek, who came out of the gates at close to peak.
