Need TV Advice

Dudes - in the market for a 40-42" TV for the new place (long story, but we had to leave our old one behind - it was starting to fail anyway). What are y'all's buying and viewing experiences from the last couple years? I'm not a big A/V guy, so I'm not looking to spend a ton, don't see the point in getting a 1080p when there's not much programming for it yet and you can't tell the difference from more than 5 feet away, etc., etc. We're coming off a Panasonic Viera which was perfectly good for my liking, if that's any indication.

Also, need a new, moderately priced stereo receiver to replace the ancient one we've been using, which sucks balls on iPod pass-through even with decent speakers.

Suggestions?

Wish someone on this blog one time worked for the world's largest elec- hey, wait a second. . .

MCA - my advice on the t.v. is you can't go wrong with a name you trust (Sony, Sharp, Panasonic); stay away from private label stuff you'd find in larger retailers (if it's a weird sounding name but promises to be the same picture quality at a lower price, go elsewhere.) Rumors abound about the human eye being able to tell the difference between 1080i, 1080p, and 720 (I'd still go with 1080, think there is a Blu Ray connectivity thing with 720; even though you might not own a Blu Ray, you will) . . . also, don't listen to people about "how the 'black' in one set is a truer 'black'" (yes, that argument exists and deserves it's own post.) I personally own 2 Sharp flat screens that are great.

Unfortunately, stereo receivers aren't as 'sexy' talk around the water cooler as flat screens so can't help much there. If it were me, I'd just go with a Sony.

MCA - we bought a 40-inch Toshiba and it's sweet. 1080p and it also has the feature (can't think of it at the moment) that prevents the "streaks" behind players when watching sports.

Sorry I missed all the good chatter on Monday...getting crushed at work.

Chuck Gauck can hardly contain his excitement for the Gophers stadium...and as RTS points out, the home schedule is phenomenal this year. Air Force is a good opener, and Cal should be a top 15 team when they come to town. Definitely some angst over the Twins, though, mitigated by the 2-for-3 over the Sox. Jan - for what it's worth, he's in the Punto and Cuddy-hater camp. Good to see the Twins contribute in the all-star game last night.

The Favre thing is such a done deal that I've tried to pretend it isn't going to happen. Maybe I can just black out during the entire Vikes season this year (a la Will Ferrell in Old School during the quiz bowl). Sadly, if we start 4-0, I'm sure I'll be all jacked up. It'll just feel dirty...and I can't get that thought out of my head.

Finally, yeah, the trash dump was an issue from day one, and it sounds like everyone just covered their eyes and pretended it wouldn't be an issue. Nice...I can already see it...the Twins are finally going after a big-name free agent and he says: I really like the guys, but man, the park stinks. No really...it smells!

P.S. Great article on Mauer. Sounds like money is less of an issue than the front office being "aggressive." I'm not holding my breath...it is going to suck seeing him suit up for the Red Sox.

P.P.S. Sad story about a guy I used to love on the Vikes (the Hassan Chop?):

"Former Vikings receiver Hassan Jones, who wore No. 84 in the Metrodome long before Randy Moss arrived on the scene, has something else in common with Mr. Moss.

Jones is on the wrong side of the law.

He faces charges of aggravated assault and felony battery after threatening to do the "Hassan chop" on his wife and adult daughter with a Big Bertha (product placement!) golf club.

Classy.

He also is charged with dragging his daughter on concrete, grabbing her by the throat, and sitting on her.

Extra classy.

Jones spent seven years with the Vikings (1986-92) and one with the Chiefs (1993).

It's not his first run-in with the law. He pleaded no contest to a charge of domestic battery in 1996, and he was charged with drunk driving in 2006."

Dudes, thanks for the insights. Jan, I assume yours are the Aquos? I saw them at [retailer that shall not be named but has large blue and yellow signage] a few weeks ago and side by side they didn't look very good next to the comparable Panasonics and Samsungs. But I'll take your word for it. I'll ask about the Blu Ray issue and whether or not they can't just be downscaled on a 720. Not that it matters much for the 1x/6 months that we actually pop in a DVD.

The Twins front office being aggressive would lead to things like making a play for Freddy Sanchez instead of just demoting Tolbert to bring Casilla back. If ever there were an obviously large upgrade available for the obviously largest hole in the lineup, for not a ton of money, this would be it. Yet somehow we don't appear to actually be exploring it in any depth. Think about a lineup of Span, Sanchez, Mauer, Morneau, Kubel, Cuddy, Crede, Delmon/Harris, Harris/Gomez. That's pretty complete.
