Vikes Happenings

Lest they get lost in the Spring Training/Gopher Hoops Collapse/New Gopher Football Stadium hubbub, a couple bits o' Viking news today:

1. Rosenfels all but official. http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/40399552.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiUo8cyaiUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aULPQL7PQLanchO7DiUr Me likey. If he doesn't start, he'll definitely push Jackson to be better.

2. From same article, Kleinsasser, Sharper, Birk likely gone. Too bad about losing Birk, he's very solid and a good citizen to have on your team. Probably replaceable. Not worried about losing either of the other two. A pair of stone hands and a pair of rapidly aging legs.

3. Apparently, Housh has indicated he'd love for the Vikes to pick him up. I don't think this means we could afford him, of course, but man, he'd be a nice compliment to Berrian and a great receiver for an offense run by a possession passer like Tarvaris. Plus, it would be "TJ to TJ...TD!!!" which would be cool.

4. Assuming we don't pick up a guy like Houshmandzadeh, is it a receiver-deep draft this year? How about a QB in the 2nd-3rd round or so? What are our other glaring needs on the horizon? O-line, I think, could use some new talent. Thoughts?

MCA - You beat me to the punch on a number of Vikings topics; loving the enthusiasm.

1. Sage; terrible name which should be an indicator of not being good (honestly, good QB'S have names like John or Terry or Roger; sometimes a Fran slips in but 'Sage' and 'Tarvaris'?) However with that said, I honestly like this move, I mean, why not?

2. Kleinsassage just took a deal from the Vikes, so he is back. Sharper lost a step, goodbye to him and hello to Calvin Johnson (which I like.) As for Birk - like the team leadership as he was the one who stood up to Moss and how steady he is but he has been at odds with Vikings management for a couple years. Considering he is 'one of us' hard to see him play for someone else but we always seem to have good centers (knock wood.)

3. Why I like the Sage pickup part Deux – from his presser today - “The No. 1 thing I want fans to know is that I’m an extremely hard worker. I think people from the Upper Midwest can really appreciate that. I’m going to work extremely hard for this football team to help us win football games. That’s sort of been the way I’ve always gone about things. I’m a guy who probably brings some fire and intensity to how I play. You’ll never have a problem with a lack of effort from me.”

4. Housh? C'mon, are you stoned? No way, I'd love it, but no way.

5. Can we reflect on the Gus Frerotte Era please? Highlight - his game in New Orleans when he threw that bomb and got crushed doing it - veteran poise. Lowlight - his 4 INTs against the Bears in a shoot-out - ladies and gentlemen Gus' career in a nutshell.

Yeah, sorry, that did come off as a little more "we should totally sign Housh" than what I really meant to say, which was more along the lines of "isn't it flattering that one of the best free agent receivers out there says he'd like to play for us? Regardless of the fact we totally can't afford him."

I'll remember Frerotte for three things: the difficulty I had pronouncing his name without sounding like I was choking on a pretzel, the difficulty rts had in spelling his name, and the 99 yarder to Berrian against Chicago.

You're right, Sage is a truly godawful name. I mean, has there ever been a name that screams "I got a lot of wedgies in grade school" more than Sage? It's an herb, for crying out loud.

Regarding Housh, is sounds like it's down to Seattle, Cincy and the Vikes. Hard to believe we can afford him, but we are $20mm something UNDER the cap right now. My worry would be that another big contract with lots of guaranteed money cripples us down the road (a la the Redskins of a few years ago).

Sounds like we REALLY want a Right Tackle, which makes sense, since Ryan Cook has sucked from day one. Other than that, I think a CB is on the wishlist, since Winfield is getting older.

Good riddance to Sharper - love him, but he's on the decline. Apparently Kiensausage is a good blocker, so I'm glad we kept him. With respect to Birk, I would love to keep him, since he's a native Minnesotan and such, but my guess is he wants out, since the front office hasn't been overly kind to him.

Can we comment on the fact that the Vikes are "reportedly" interested in Jay Cutler? C'mon.

Last night on 'CCO's "Rosen Sports Sunday" some dude from the Pioneer Press (sorry, don't read that rag) was saying that Housh-sker Du was still in Minneapolis and a deal was going to be done. Plate of crow, sir?

At the very least I like how we are always in the "mix" for every free agent out there.

Wow, the Mpls media really whiffed on the Housh story. They were telling the whole world he was staying in Mpls for the night, when in fact, he took a 9:45pm Northwest(!) flight out of town.

But, as Jan states, I guess i take solace in the fact that the Vikes actually have an owner that wants to win - or at least pretends to want to win. Can you imagine dipshi* McCombs ever flying someone in on their jet and offering a $40mm deal??!?

As for Cutler...I just don't see any way the Broncos actually trade him. Perhaps we give them Rosenfels and a 1st round pick, but that still seems like giving up if you're the Broncos. Oh, and I'm sure there are at least 7 other teams that are "interested" in Cutler.

Regarding the ex-QB from Tulsa, isn't there some rule like E before R except after C, except in words like neighbor and weigh...aw nevermind.
