Bandwagon Time: Christian Ponder

Alright, I'm all in on #7 (do we have a choice?) My real reason is that after reading this article on him Ponder said, in reference to Woodson killling him with those picks last weekend: "It's hard to eliminate that guy from the game plan, eventually, you will have to go at him and win against him." I like the attitude and confidence.

By the way, I vote for his new nickname to be "Night Ranger", all in favor say "nothing", great, it's agreed then.

Let me just be sure I'm understanding - you want to nickname our QB of the future after a crap '80s band whose most famous song is about a girl named (or who is a) Christian? I have some fond associations for that song from middle school or so, but then again every time I hear it these days I also think of the incredibly unsettling dread of the scene in which it's used in "Boogie Nights," what with the guns and underage Thai boy setting off firecrackers. Paul Thomas Anderson's brilliance on display, no doubt. Not so sure I'm down with that nickname, though.

I like Ponder's attitude. A lot. Not only the quote, but the fact that the quote was in connection with him getting a TD pass through Woodson after those two picks.

Also, he's 1-1 as a starter, which is better than most rookies can ever say. With a road win, albeit one with heavy help from the best RB of his generation and a no excuse missed FG attempt.

If I weren't vehemently opposed to the now ubiquitous use of the phrase "all-in" (probably because I'm still just generally pissy about the fact that poker...fucking poker, for god's sake!...has become all the rage and is treated as a sport and getting more coverage on ESPN than actual, real sports, and that I have to actually know the names of more than zero professional poker players to keep up with Joe Sixpack, and that's from whence the phrase comes), I would probably say that I, too, am ... with Ponder.

Ok, Night Ranger is a stretch, but it is kinda a cool name outside of the "Sister Christian" part. (A little research shows the some to be about a band member's sister who he hadn't seen in a while and is now all growned up. Like our little rookie.)

As for Ponder (how about CP? AP and CP?) I think he played well yesterday and last week. He doesn't seem to get flustered (can't say that Alex Smith's first 5 years in the NFL have gone as smoothly as CP's first two games.) He also doesn't force the ball where it should go (he actually throws it away when he should.)

People up here are belly-aching over the fact that if we started CP to begin the year we wouldn't be in this hole, I can't say I agree with that at all but I like what I see.

BOLD PREDICTION SEGMENT - Vikes/Pack Monday Night = Vikes 35, Pack 30.

Wow! That is indeed bold. I like it. Would love to see it. I fear we had everything fall in place last week against them and aren't likely to do it again. Rodgers started picking us apart as the game wore on.

CP and AP works pretty well. How about "Cogitate" to play on his last name? Every time he makes a play you get the pleasure of exclaiming "Cogitate!"

Or "3DC" (third down conversion).

3DC -

During his first road start in the NFL, Ponder completed 18 of 28 passes for a touchdown and no interceptions. On third downs, he completed nine of 10 passes for seven first downs. Last week, 12 of his 13 completions went for first downs or touchdowns; Sunday, 14 of his 18 completions went for first downs or touchdowns.

I will take credit for both Minnesota wins as well as Ponder's success. I suggested hopping off the Minnesota bandwagon, there by essentially signaling the bottom of the Minnesota sports team market (same idea as when people with name tag jobs start telling you to buy gold, that is your cue to sell). Everyone can thank me and you are welcome.

Just wanted to note that we're probably at a twelve-month high here, what with both the Vikes and Gophers winning the same weekend (and a trophy staying in Minneapolis for the second year in a row - something ol' Brewster never knew), plus the Vikings showing reason for hope for the longterm future. Also, remarkably, Gopher hockey looks good again and has a new star. 4-0 in WCHA play after two road sweeps, including at the defending nat'l champs in Duluth, and ranked in the top 5 for probably the first time in three years.

I know, the bar's so low a rat couldn't limbo under it right now, but I'll take what I can get these days.

Don't forget that WNBA title.

I think the WNBA title was the first step in changing Minnesota sports. As MCA would say, all in.
