Talledega 2011

This is the only pic I took all weekend. I took it between 1 and 2 AM Sunday morning in a public restroom. In case you can't tell exactly what it is, it is some poor sap passed out on the toilet. I have no idea how long he had been there or when he woke up. Some people go skiing in Dubai, some people go to Alabama for a car race.

RTS - I am very fascinated by the annual Talledega trip. What intrigues me the most is this: is the scene even more redneck than my wildest dreams, or is the whole NASCAR culture really just a stereotype? I'm guessing it's somewhere in between, as I have seen a race in Charlotte, and there was a good mix of jorts-wearing, silver bullet drinking, hillbilly-teeth having folks as well as "normal" people. Would love to tag along some year...I'm guessing I'd stand out a bit, if only because I can't grow facial hair.

There but for the grace of God go us (well, at least I know RTS and I are capable of passing out like that.) RTS we need some stats - number of guys in your party, sleeping arrangements, cases of beer consumed, number of pictures taken on average of a girl willing to show her tits, duration of your trip, times you booted, a brief run down of the drunken "check in" call you placed to Mrs RTS, times you thought "I better continue to be a positive role model for my daughter or else she is gonna end up at these events with 7 kids in tow....you know the important things.

Where do I begin? It is like the Super Bowl of redneckedness (I think I just invented a word). It sucks you in and you become part of the scene. There are so many elements that bring it all together.

-First the tailgating. Instead of drinking 3 hrs before the game, people start drinking 3 days before the race. We grill up top notch food all weekend long. One year I ate 7 different animals. I definitely drink more this weekend than the rest of the year combined. We play a lot of corn hole and beer pong.

-The people watching is better than the Minnesota State Fair. There are tons of your typical rednecks, but I must say that there must be a lot of the "millionaire next door" types as well. Those RVs and buses were purchased with money that came from somewhere.

-Talledega Blvd is like a girls gone wild video (it was pretty tame this year). We wear pimp coats when we go out and it is like moths to flame. I am 36 and know I have no game, but on the BLVD with my Elvis glasses and coat, chicks are lining up for pictures, the chance to dance with us and occasionally lift their shirts.

-The race itself is amazing. We watch from the roof of the RV in the front row between turn 3 and 4. I do not watch NASCAR or follow it, but seeing it live is a sight worth seeing. I have been to the Atlanta track and it minor leagues compared to Talledega.

-Our sleeping arrangement- I was worried the first year I went. These guys do it right though. There are 2 RVs and everyone gets a bed, pullout couch or air mattress. Truth be told I could sleep anywhere.

I am lucky to be invited with these guys. I am sure my experience in the RV parked in the gated community in the track is quite different from the people in tents outside of the track. For one weekend, we are all united hating Kyle Busch.
