Hellboy 2 and the Johan Santana trade
If Hollywood has taught me anything, it has taught me it is acceptable to take an idea and do it over and over again until it is beaten to death. It does not have to be a good idea, just an idea. How else does sequel like Hellboy 2 get made? Anyway, here are the stats from the players involved in the Johan trade. No analysis, just straight numbers:
Carlos Gomez- BA .282, 31 runs, 23 RBIS, 17 SB and 4 HRs (4th on the team behind Morneau, Kubel and Monroe).
Phil Humber AAA Rochester- 3-5, 5.53 ERA, 1.717 WHIP
Kevin Mulvey AAA Rochester- 2-6, 4.10 ERA 1.63 WHIP
Deolis Guerra A+ Fort Myers 6-1, 4.23 ERA 1.41 WHIP
VS
Johan Santana 7-3, 3.20 ERA 1.20 WHIP, 71K in 12 games
Twins/ Yankees is on ESPN tonight.

If Blackburn, Perkins, and Slowey (and Baker for that matter) hadn't all morphed into a quasi-decent starting rotation I think I would feel worse about the Santana deal as it would really be Santana v Gomez. Do I miss Johan? Yes. Would we be better than we are right now with Santana as the ace and Denard Span in center? Tough one, but I'd say no.
Guerra is like 19 years old so we won't be seeing him for a few years. Humber and Mulvey obviously got some work to do. If one of those three pitchers pans out and cracks the rotation and becomes a 15 game winner then we got the better deal. If that doesn't happen but Gomez continues to get better it might be a wash.
