Monday smorgasbord, courtesy of Peter King

Gents,
As things have been a bit quiet recently, I thought I'd lob a few things in for your reading pleasure:

1) Vikes cut Erasmus James, which means that only one player from the 2005 draft is still around. You'll recall that this is the draft where we had two first round picks in exchange for dealing Randy Moss. From Peter King:

It should interest, or sicken, everyone wearing purple. The Vikings' two most valuable chips entering the 2005 off-season were Randy Moss and their first-round draft choice, the 18th overall pick. Imagine if I told you three years ago that the Vikings would have turned Randy Moss and the 18th overall pick in the draft into absolutely, totally nothing.

That's what's happened -- unless you consider the 27th receiver in the 2008 draft a bonanza.
In the Moss trade, in came linebacker Napoleon Harris and first- and seventh-round picks. Harris lasted two mostly undistinguished years, compiling 84 tackles and 3.5 sacks before moving to Kansas City in 2007 as a free agent. The first-rounder, seventh overall, was wide receiver Troy Williamson, who had three touchdowns in three totally undistinguished years. He's one of the biggest busts in the top 10 in recent years. The seventh-rounder, cornerback Adrian Ward, never played a game for the Vikes. And last Friday, defensive end Erasmus James, the injury-plagued first-rounder from 2005, was waived. He gave the Vikes all of five sacks in three years.

This is what the Minnesota Vikings have left from Randy Moss and a first-round pick in 2005: Jaymar Johnson, a wide receiver from Jackson State. The Vikes dealt Williamson to Jacksonville for a sixth-round pick in March, and Johnson -- yes, 26 receivers went before him -- is the flag-bearer for one of the worst first rounds a team has had in recent history.

2) King spends the first page of MMQB talking about T-Jac. Nothing super-insightful...but gives me mild to moderate optimism going into next season. Check it out at the link below.

3) Interesting tidbit from King about the Santana trade that never happened with Boston: Found myself thinking the other day about the aborted Johan Santana trade to the Red Sox, which the Sox didn't do because it was too rich for their blood. Minnesota wanted, if you believe the reports, either Jon Lester or Jacoby Ellsbury, along with minor-leaguers Justin Masterson, a pitcher, and Jed Lowrie, an infielder.

Lester threw a no-hitter last week. Over his past five starts, he's thrown 34.1 innings and allowed 18 hits and six earned runs. Over his past five starts, Santana has pitched 32.1 innings and allowed 37 hits and 13 earned runs. I haven't even mentioned Masterson -- who, in two emergency-duty starts after being called up from Double-A, is 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA -- or Lowrie, who beat Minnesota with a homer May 10 before being sent back to the minors.

Hope everyone is still in one piece after the holiday weekend.

BG - King scooped me on TJac. A few weeks ago I was working on a TJac story that showed his numbers versus Cutler and Vince Young (came out in the same year) and tried to go head-to-head over the course of their first 16 games (remember, this is all TJac has played.) Basically, Cutler is a little ahead of TJac and Young is a little behind. I was trying to show that he is not as bad as people think and I, for one, am on the bandwagon for this year (no, not buying a jersey yet.) BTW - Blogger needs to find a way to allow Excel spreadsheets to be uploaded.

Aren't Boston sports-types the smartest people on the planet?

As for my weekend, if you count three nights of heavy boozing followed by a full day of planting Azelia's, impatients, and bushes (yes, there is a "green thumb" in Minneapolis named 'Per') then my weekend was remarkable.

Good stuff, good stuff. If there was any debate that James was a bust, it is now official.

I saw an article on NBC sports that was saying the Vikings signed 2 of the top non-drafted free agents. One was Erin Henderson, EJ's brother. The rundown on him is that he is excellent against the run but blows against the pass which is why he was undrafted. I don't remember who the other dude was.

I have been home alone since Friday morning. By Sunday afternoon, I had banged out all of the small projects and errands I had to do. By Monday afternoon I was bored out of my skull.

Changing gears to the Twins, I was the one who answered leave Boof in the starting rotation. He should definitely not be considered the number 2 guy more like #4 behind Blackburn and Perkins. If he was taken out of the roation, who do we have to take his spot?

I have to say, as resident enforcer of Viking Pessimism, I was very impressed with what I read about Jackson. I guess I had no feeling for his personality before, down here in BearsLand. He came across in King's column as intelligent, driven and witty. The crack about Packers fans already tailgating for opening night was great.

I happened to be sitting in the sports book at Mandalay Bay, catching part of the Twins/Rangers game, during the last three innings of Lester's no-no. I was ready to punch some of the self-righteous Sawks fans who wandered in and wouldn't shut up about how awesome he is while he shut down a Triple A offense. By Saturday, I was ready to drop a bomb on Bristol, CT. Who else's no hitters get 6 days of SportsCenter coverage? Good god, people throw no hitters every year and we talk about it for a day or two. The Red Sox do it and it's a weeklong circle jerk. Speaking of, why was it newsworthy that the "oldest living Red Sox pitcher" passed away last week? Did anyone else see this? Do you think we'd get a blurb in the paper about the oldest living Indians pitcher dying?

Memorial Day weekend was great - just missed a 39 on the back at Crooked Stick, went to the 500 Sunday. By the way, standing invitation to anyone who wants to come in for the race is still open. The reunited IRL will be getting better and better in quality.
